They allowed us to check in early from 12pm as we were going to a wedding which was good, but even when we arrived at 12:30pm the room wasn't quite ready so we had to wait 10 minutes or so which wasn't the end of the world for us, but may have been for others in even more of a hurry.

A pleasant little market town, the surrounding area is beautiful, especially Teesdale. Bowes Museum is in Barnard Castle and is well worth a visit, expect to spend the whole day there! High Force, Low Force and the Bowlees visitor centre are a short drive away and we would recommend visiting them. We stayed there on a Monday and Tuesday, a lot of eating places were closed those days. We did have, by chance, a great meal at the Three Horseshoes Hotel, it's a shame it's so far away from us!

The town itself is compact but offers a lot to see - from the Witham Centre, shops, cafes and pubs. The crown has to be the Bowes Museum - a truly wonderful gallery and museum in a striking building - a French chateau in the depths of Teesdale.

Barnard Castle is a very interesting town with many historical features. The main streets have a good range of shops and several very good places to have lunch or a coffee and cake, but not many restaurants for an evening meal. The town has many good open green spaces. There was a pleasant atmosphere during the day. Not sure about the evening as I had a meal at my accommodation on the edge of town. There is a very large and grand looking museum in the town, but as I was there for a sporting event I didn't have time to visit.

Friendly market town, with lovely local shops. Free parking in the market place. Surrounding area has much to see and do. Bishop Auckland has a gluten-free cafe which is well worth a visit if you have any dietary requirements.

It was a beautiful place.
It was a beautiful place. People are very friendly and chatty. Has everything you need close by. A lovely peaceful river walk nearby. Lots of places to eat. Tip, the roads are busy even during the night. They had lorries passing through early hours, maybe those who like a quiet night, it would not be ideal staying in the town centre. Plenty of places to stay off the town centre though. Well worth the visit anyway. We are going back and will stay on the high Street.
Great place to stay to visit Barnard Castle and the surrounding area. This is an independent hotel that has been refurbished to a good standard and retains its character - much better than a faceless chain! We ate in the restaurant which was good pub food. Very good breakfast.
Beautiful character property in an idyllic location on the river. Tastefully decorated with interesting items and very well equipped. Super comfortable bed. Excellent location within easy walking distance to shops, pubs, restaurants and attractions of Barnard Castle
