The staff and food are excellent. The room was vast, and it needs some TLC, obviously hindered by the Grade II listing. Staff went above and beyond.

Gorgeous rural location on a farm. We could see sheep and cows, and lie in bed watching hares and deer running across the field. There is very little light pollution at night, so great for star gazing.
The room was spacious and warm and the bed comfortable. There weren't homemade scones and biscuits were provided in the room, as well as tea and coffee with fresh milk. Also lovely toiletries in the bathroom. Breakfast was made to order in the morning, with a range of options, as well as a buffet.

There is not a lot to see of the castle itself, other than great views over the surrounding valley. We visited in the autumn, and were offered fallen apples to take away. The town of Barnard Castle was worth a visit. There were some lovely quirky shops and free roadside parking on offer.

Barnard castle is an interesting country town.
Barnard castle is an interesting country town. It seemed quite bustling to us. There are a number of interesting shops and it appears to have a thriving antiques industry. You can visit the centrally located ruined castle and the huge Bowes Museum is also fairly easy to walk to. The museum also has a large car park, cafe and shop.
The town's location is easily accessible from the A66 and not far from the A1M. If travelling from the west, it's about 45 minutes from Penrith and the M6.

There was plenty of shops and cafes, Bowes museum was excellent, take time to explore the town too by looking beyond the high street and venturing up the alleyways and read about the towns history. There are plenty of walks so take hiking boots.
