Between lush hills and undulating coastline, Gijón is the largest Asturias city. Its oldest part covers a peninsula with the modern Elogio del Horizonte sculpture at its green tip. Cobbled streets house brightly painted restaurants and bars serving the acclaimed local cider, and arches lead to stylish Plaza Mayor. Underground are the Campo Valdés Roman bath ruins, and Campa de Torres has an archaeology park.
Flanking the peninsula is Poniente beach, curving between the marina and aquarium, and overlooked by the Talasoponiente spa. Small Playa del Arbeyal is by the port, and the promenade of popular San Lorenzo beach continues to waterfront San Pedro church.
Gijón activities include diving and dolphin watching, and there are 2 golf courses in green surroundings. The Atlantic Botanical Gardens were the first in northern Spain, and sit opposite the impressive buildings of Laboral University’s Viesques campus. Landscaped Isabel La Católica Park is close to is the El Bibio bullring and across the river are the Gijón Exhibition Centre and Asturias Museum.
Another museum was home to the city’s most famous son – Melchor de Jovellanos. Also named after him is an elegant theatre overlooking Paseo de Begoña park.
Booking.com’s Gijón accommodation includes luxury beachfront hotels, guest houses near the train station, and historic country houses.

We were surprised by Gijón, as it has a lot to offer. In particular, a superb beach, beautiful promenade, interesting old town and harbour. Lots of flat walking, and a very clean place. Also an interesting museum dedicated to Asturian people and their way of life.

We arrived in poor weather conditions so we didn't have as much time to look around as we would have liked but overall there is a lot to see and do around the town and surrounding area. It's worth another visit but probably late spring/early summer.

It's such a vibrant city with excellent facilities.
It's such a vibrant city with excellent facilities. The port area is delightful. Take a trip on a sightseeing boat or the city tours bus, both of which are well worth doing. Take a sightseeing tour and enjoy the scenery that Asturias has to offer. It's breathtaking! Search the back roads for local food at great prices. Take the bus from the airport and save a fortune on transfers. The bus stops a very short stroll from the arrivals lounge and drops you right outside departures for the return.

Gijon is a lovely town to explore - a nice old town area between the port & the beach. The stroll along the beach itself is a pleasant 30 minutes from end to end. Shops can be found down the backstreets. Plenty of restaurant choice - but better to book in the main season for sure.

Spacious, clean, and modern room with a large and very comfortable double bed. The hotel is located in a beautiful, peaceful neighbourhood with easy access from A-8, but not too far from the city centre. Secure parking safely visible from the hotel. Excellent and superbly helpful staff. We were only driving through Gijon and stayed for one night but shall return and visit Gijon again with more time.
As it was off season, the staff upgraded our room for a more spacious one on their own initiative. Very nice indeed!
When I arrived I remembered I had stayed here before and the lady that met me remembered me so we had a nice talk. She explained some of the culture of northern Spain to me. I decided to stay an extra night before moving on to my destination. It's in a great location within minutes of the beach. I definitely recommend staying here and it's perfect if you fly into Asturias airport. Ryanair fly here from Dublin now so it's a lovely city but also a great place to start your trip to northern Spain. Also great wi-fi
The apartment was well-located, basically but comfortably furnished. Our host was very helpful and checking in/leaving was very straightforward.
Gijón was a great place to base ourselves - lovely, interesting town surrounded by beautiful countryside and beaches. We visited Covadonga, Picos de Europa, Lastres, Oviedo, Candas as well as what Gijón had to offer. We will definitely come back to this part of Spain!
Comfortable and modern hotel in central Gijón. Room was spacious with a wonderful bathroom. The room had excellent blackout curtains, I slept really well. Breakfast was very tasty with a wide variety of options
