The hotel is very close (10mins walk) to the old port and via the elevators or walking up the hill, it is about 15-20 mins to the tube station. Direct views of the beach from the bar. There are no grocery shops around and on Sundays/holidays it can be extremely quiet

A beautiful and spacious apartment. It was spotlessly clean. The hosts had thoughtfully filled the fridge with essential items for us as well. I really can not recommend it highly enough.

My wife and I have stayed here for almost two weeks, and we both have to say that it was truly a marvellous experience!
At first, we both were a bit concerned about the (new for us) idea of sharing the apartment with the hosts, but finally decided that it could be an opportunity for us to get in contact with the locals and to know Getxo and Bilbao better. And it did play out well indeed! The hosts, Carlos and Bich, went out of their way to give us as much comfort and privacy as possible: they gave us all the essential information about what to see and where to go, introduced us to several local customs, taught us a word or two in Basque, and even spoiled us with some local treats.
It is very important to note: all that happened without intruding our privacy at the slightest. We got an isolated bedroom with its own bathroom, and a cozy compact living room as well. We usually met the hosts during the breakfast — which was wonderful every single time, I must say, — but during the day, they seemed invisible and almost non-existent. That level of respect to our privacy was very much appreciated.
Finally, the view from both rooms is really great (see photos)! I enjoyed looking at the port every morning and watching how ferries and cargo ships arrive and depart. It was also very convenient to check out the weather: if it was raining, or if a cloud was sitting atop the mountain across the bay, or if there were whitecaps on the waves and sailing yachts were all over the place.
Would definitely stay here again!

Using the local transport is easy and we recommend the Bilbao Bizkaia Card - it can be used on all public transport and if you share a card between 2 people or more the additional fares are discounted. Can buy in stations etc. The town is busy but not loud and feels safe. Local people are friendly and helpful with things like the public bike hire.

This is a lovely town about 25-30 minutes by metro to Bilbao. People in Gexto are friendly, loads of restaurants and shops here also. We used this as a base to visit Bilbao and really glad we stayed here and not in BIlbao itself which we found to be just OK.

If you're staying in Bilbao, consider the neighborhood of Gexto. It features many local restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, bakeries, shops, and other businesses, all within a few streets that are easily walkable. The neighborhood is hilly, so there is a lot of up and down walking. The metro is in the town center and connects to downtown Bilbao in about 20 minutes. The metro stops every 5 to 10 minutes (Algorta), depending on the day. There are local buses to get around, but we didn't have time to figure out the schedule. We mostly walked. It was 15 minutes to where we stayed by the edge of the cliff overlooking the water.

Getxo is now a suburb of Bilbao on the sea shore.
Getxo is now a suburb of Bilbao on the sea shore. It has charm and the walk along the estuary and beach fronts are enjoyable, especially in the evening or weekend when residents get outside to socialise. Information about the grand houses on the seafront are displayed all along the walkway, with English translations. The small old fishing port is a great place to stop and have some "Raciones" and people watch. You might have to be patient for a table though as it is popular. The Vizcaya bridge is fascinating and well worth a visit. Given its proximity to the port we were surprised how clean Ereaga beach is (we didn´t get to the preferred Soplana beach some 5 km along the coast). Overnight accommodation is expensive compared to other areas along the coast. We stayed here because of its proximity to Bilbao airport (only 20 minutes by car) and it was worth staying for 24 hours.

Getxo is a great spot. you can access beaches and small towns. Great bars for Pintxos and wine. The Vizcaya bridge is here, definitely recommend a trip over to Portugalete, either on foot or in the gondola. Las Arenas is a great little town to potter around. Superb links to Bilbao. there is also a large shopping center - Artea.
There is a great walk along from the Vizcaya Bridge to the city beach.
the area is spotlessly clean and we felt very safe walking around.
Drop into the Kaxio bar for a spot of people watching and pintxos.
On the Portugalete side there is a fab Italian restaurant - Garbatella.
You can get a Barik card in the metro and it will take you all over.

We stayed at the hotel to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. All of the hotel staff were friendly, welcoming and they couldn’t do enough to make our stay more memorable. The rooms were clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable. There was air conditioning and we even had a heated toilet seat! This is a really up-market hotel. It was fairly expensive but the price was well worth the money for the memories we took away.
A perfect place to stay for a few days. Located in the heart of the Old Port in Getxo where the Nervión river meets the Atlantic. 12 minutes walking from Algorta metro station, plenty of shops and decent taverns nearby. The apartment is beautiful with maritime-themed design (but no cheesy naval kitsch, if you get me ;). All staff support comes via WhatsApp but it's impeccable. We had a wonderful time.
