San Jose is one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica!
San Jose is one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica! We often frequented Cumpanis (for their coffee and OUT OF THIS WORLD bread) and we enjoyed walking around the neighborhood. Our favorite place that we ate was at Ram Luna (it's a drive, but so worth it)! Super easy to get around and everything you need is within walking distance. We highly recommend visiting the National Museum (especially if you love butterflies)!

Utter dump.
Utter dump. Area west of Sabana is better but not a lot of dacilities. SJ is a city full of fast food outlets, rubbish strewn all over the place, more potholes than actual tarmac, homeless vagabonds sleeping in the streets. On top of that prices for just about everything are extortionate. 3rd world conditions at 1st World prices. Get in and get out, rapido

We spent one afternoon and evening in San José at the end of our trip to Costa Rica/Panama. For us this was enough. After spending three weeks in the natural surroundings offered by these two amazing countries, the city in San José was an abrupt change. We are glad we saw it, but it is not really a city where you need much more time in.

There's a plaza about half mile down the street with restaurants within walking distance. The ATM machine is across the parking lot next to the convention center ( kinda dark area ) go to the ATM at day time. If you want to cross the highway you may want to get a taxi. The overall area seems comfortable. Not a party town. You'll have to travel a few miles.

Go straight to "La Plaza de la Cultura".
Go straight to "La Plaza de la Cultura". The "Teatro Nacional" is right there and across from it, you can go up to the "Hotel Costarrica's" restaurant to enjoy a view of the plaza and have a nice breakfast. From there, walk down to the "Mercado central". There you'll find all the souvenirs you need to bring back with you, as well as many options of freshly roasted coffee. Eat there. It's authentic and fresh. That's it. If you want to add the "Museo de oro", or the "Museo Nacional" to your stops that one day, it's nice, but there's nothing else to see. Don't wonder around. I'm telling you, I'm tico, I've plenty of friends visiting from aboard all the time and Costa Rica's beauty lies on its food, it's people and on it's beaches, national parks and volcanos, not on its cities.

Honestly, I was surprised to see how untaken care of the city was. I saw way too many dirty streets covered in trash and homeless people. It's a very crowded city with waaay too much traffic. I probably wouldn't spend more than a day here next time. I do recommend visiting the San Jose Central Market though, it's great for souvenir shopping and there are also small puestos where you can eat and the food is a lot cheaper than you would find it anywhere also and it's just as good!
I stayed at Studio Hotel Boutique as a stopover in San Jose before travelling around Costa Rica. The hotel was very nice and staff were incredibly friendly/ supportive in answering questions and booking additional travel for us.
I used the hotel's gym and had a great breakfast. The hotel is more luxurious than it even looks in the pictures and a friendly concierge recommended a local restaurant for us to have our first typical Costa Rican dish of the trip!
The hotel has nearby restaurants and small markets where you can find affordable food and other items. It is easy to get to. It is not located in downtown San Jose, but I did not mind that. I felt safe at all times. The place has great staff. Breakfast was pinto and eggs, fruit, and coffee (food). The building has wooden floor and stairs, so you may hear some noise (people walking), but nothing out of control.
We stayed at Barcelo as the first hotel for our Honeymoon after our flight to San Jose for 2 nights. The staff were so friendly, they left us a lovely Honeymoon surprise and loved the free snack room with food and drinks :) a huge breakfast selection which was lovely. We loved the pool area and it was just the perfect place to relax after our flight and settle into Costa Rica!
Great hotel in a really central location in the middle of San Jose. We stayed here for x2 nights before moving on to other places in Costa Rica. The hotel is incredibly well kept, decor is modern and breakfast was fab! With it's central location it was super easy to explore San Jose.
What a gem of hotel in San Jose.
Good Food, Clean Room, generally clean premises and a good pool for a dip after a busy 10 days around costa rica. Only stayed 1 night but would be ideal for a short city break.
