Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. During the second half of the 19th century, roads and railway lines were developed, allowing a constant influx of visitors. The first hotel in Grindelwald was opened in 1888, and by 1914 there were over 30. Check the hotel map of Grindelwald and surroundings to choose the location that best suits your needs.
The village has several railway stations offering regional links. It is 20 km from the city of Interlaken, while Bern Airport is 70 km away. Whether you’re looking for a 5-star hotel, a ski resort, or a cosy ‘gasthaus’, don’t miss the Grindelwald deals available on Booking.com!

Grindelwald has spectacular scenary, literally breathtaking.
Grindelwald has spectacular scenary, literally breathtaking. Resort has a nice charm , although is very busy in the village with day visitors . Ski slopes however are not too busy and lines are generally short . Supermarket is very good . Bus and train service excellent. Slopes on Murren side are steep, even blues would be tricky for beginners. Firstbahn slopes are sunny and good for beginners, families and those wanting a relaxed day’s skiing. Take the train up to Klein Schendig at least once it’s beautiful, other days take Eiger Express its quick. We travelled by train from Zürich to Lucern and then on to Interlaken on the Panoramic express, finally the train up to Grindelwald, the journey was a highlight of our trip.

There is a lot of Hype about Grindelwald.
There is a lot of Hype about Grindelwald. The village is pretty and of course you have the 3 giants to admire. There are a lot of activities available. My opinion, it’s not the prettiest place, it’s expensive and very crowded with tourists from afar…. The country men and women are inclined to go for the day., and I felt it has lost its quaint Swissness.
Grindelwalds is easy to get to with a large car park if your hotel doesn’t provide parking. Excellent Rezent Fondue in Hotel Hirschen but reserve your table Guest or not.

Grindelwald is a classic alpine village - so beautiful and charming. Its like a fairytale, especially in winter. Exquisite mountain views from everywhere. Lovely cafes and restaurants, shops for souvenirs and snow gear, but the town still feels small and quaint. Good for families - there are play areas and a good supermarket as well as activities like toboganning. From Grindelwald you can get to a few excellent ski areas as well as other attractions like Jungfraujoch and the Eiger Express, as well as First mountain and summer adventure activities. It is included in the Jungfrau Travel Pass by train making it a great trip that can be done in a day from Interlaken or for several days staying in the village.

The view from the lounge, dining table, and verandah never got old. The accommodation was spacious and perfect for our family of four (including two teenagers). The heating kept us cozy, the cabin was spotless, and the kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed. The beds were super comfortable, and the location was ideal—close to restaurants, the Coop for groceries, and just a short walk to the gondola. The host was absolutely delightful! We were so sad to say goodbye.

This town is just staggering beautiful.
This town is just staggering beautiful. We went in October and it wasn't too crowded but there were a lot of big groups of tourists even in Oct. I can't imagine how crowded this town is in peak summer months.

Grindelwald is a busy town that still retains the legendary Swiss charm, lots of shops and restaurants, but with easy access to trams and hiking trails. Free bus ticket for staying in many hotels gets you to the “Terminal” from where you can access all the local transportation options to other regions. Many options for dining. Scenery is spectacular with the largest mountains seemingly rising right out of town.

Although one spends very little time in one's room in a place like Grindelwald with so much to do every day, Hotel Bernerhof provides an exceptional base from which to springboard each day's events. Rooms are comfortable with exceptional views (worth spending slightly extra for a room with a view), very friendly and helpful staff and a location that cannot be beaten for proximity to transport, restaurants, etc.
Nice hotel with one of the best views of the Eiger Mountain. Comfortable rooms with balcony and good view. Very helpful and welcoming staffs. Good breakfast. They have a good parking space as well.
You can book all the Jungfrau cable car and train tickets from the reception. Jungfrau Cable car terminal and Grindelwald hbf is within walking distance.
A felt very welcomed the moment I stepped into the hotel. The lovely couple were so helpful and easy to communicate with. The room was spacious and had an amazing view of the mountains. If I ever come back to grindelwald I will do my best to book atleast one night here.
The breakfast was very good.
Location was very convenient, only a 5 minute walk to the Grindelwald station and 10 minute walk to the Terminal station. Buses run right past the hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful
