The owner was so lovely - helped me organise a tour of the silver mines and a taxi to the bus station (as well as booking the bus for us!). Good location right - could walk to everything easily. Good wifi - we were able to work from the hotel without any issues.

Hostal Tukos La Casa Real, hotel in Potosí

Featuring a terrace with a panoramic views, a skybar and an on-site restaurant, this 160 year old remodeled house offers accommodations in the ancient city of Potosí. Free WiFi access is available.

Out of everywhere I have stayed in Peru and Bolivia, this was by far the worst accommodation. The only redeeming factor is the location is very central, however the accommodation itself is so run down and absolutely not worth the money. Firstly the rooms stink with a putrid smell from the drains which never goes away, the mattress was no longer solid in anyway and folded in on itself when sat on, let alone slept on, accompanied with ripped and stained bedding. The handle on the toilet was broken and when this was shown to the staff, I was told to just lift up the lid on the back of the toilet put my hand inside and pull the contraption to make the toilet flush each time!?! The keys to the doors are either bent completely out of shape or jam consistently. There is a consistent loud banging coming from the rooftop/upper floors that travels throughout the building and was only silent for 4 hours between 1am - 5am (I didn't sleep much whilst there). I also had to change rooms, as whilst it was initially lovely to enter a warm and cosy room, the radiators function to turn it off weren't working, so the room became sweltering hot, has no window or ventilation and once inside the hotel the entire building is in a type of greenhouse structure, so no fresh air comes in at all. This initial room also looks out into a shared lobby, with people coming and going but all the bathrooms for the rooms face right on this area, but have no privacy, except for a flimsy and see-through shower curtain that is ripped and only just hanging on. When outside in the lobby area if anyone is in the shower, you can see everything!. Very badly designed with no thought whatsoever in the comfort of guests. The rooms + bathrooms aren't clean either with evidence of previous guests.

Always tricky to review a whole city.

Always tricky to review a whole city. Few travellers stay anywhere long enough to properly do anywhere justice. Nevertheless. A charming little colonial era city perched high in the mountains, the mining history of the city is a great draw. Once the center of the Spanish empire's silver mining and minting endeavors, the colonial legacy remains in its attractive architecture and mining industry. The other main attraction are the national dish of Saltenas which are often said to the best in the country. I can confirm that there s strength to this argument. The local churches are beautiful and you can get tours of them regularly. The main cathedral is definitely worth a look. The Mint is usually the main attraction and it interesting and well guided. The only killer is the altitude which is breathtaking. Ensure you are acclimatized!

Potosi is wonderful/ beautiful and was the richest city in the world for it´s silver. Beautiful architecture and culture. But it lies more than 4000 meters above sea level with a harsh climate and you need help with tours and car rentals

The mine tour is a must-do.

The mine tour is a must-do. Book it through your hostel, because most Bolivian tour companies can't be bothered to keep the information on their websites up to date. Then spend a half-day walking the hilly, narrow streets admiring the faded grandeur of the city's architecture (both in daytime and lit up after dark), and you will have seen what there is to see in Potosi.

Very important historical city as it supplied enormous amount of silver to the Spanish empire. See the Casa de la Moneda, of course, and the Santa Teresa Convent, both of which have good multilingual tours. The eating options in the city are limited, especially when compared to Sucre.

    Interesting place!

Interesting place! We actually didn't do a mining tour as we thought it was a bit voyeuristic but a guy we met did and said it was good. The city itself it beautiful with little winding cobblestone streets, and there were lots of interesting churches, plazas and towers to explore :)
