Quality Hotel Bentinck, hotel in Portland

Originally constructed in 1855, Quality Hotel Bentinck features Victorian-style architecture. Just 2 minutes’ walk from Portland Beach, it offers 2 on-site restaurants and a fitness center.

The standard continental breakfast was ok, but the ordered breakfast was pretty good. Was made to order pretty quickly so that was appreciated.

Cape Nelson Lighthouse, hotel in Portland

Overlooking the Tasman Sea, Cape Nelson Lighthouse offers luxurious cottages with free Wi-Fi and a warming fireplace. Enjoy an on-site café and BBQ facilities.

We drove up to the cottage & was met by a huge kangaroo eating the grass. It was a site to see since we don't see them in the US. I spoke with the owner & he gave me the code to the door & assured me the kangaroo won't bother us & it didn't. Just quite a bit of kangaroo poop to walk around. We saw that breakfast was included & he explained that the food was in the fridge & we had to cook it ourselves. It was a wonderful breakfast!! eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, tea. We've never stayed in a cottage like this & it was an awesome experience! We did the lighthouse tour earlier that day & were the only ones & the guide spent so much time with us, we had our own 3 hour private tour of the lighthouse. You definately must do the tour! We were on a coastal road trip & decided to stay at the cottages since it was getting late & we didn't have any lodging lined up ahead of time. I'm so glad we stayed! The fireplace & the heaters kept us warm & it provided all the amenities we needed. The owner called & checked on us about an hour later to make sure we got in & all was well. I would highly recommend the cottage! As a Travel Advisor, I will be recommending it to my clients should they be in the area.

If you're travelling east to west along the Great Ocean Road, travel a little further and visit Portland. It's a lovely town with great facilities. We stayed at the Clifftop Apartments - a really great place to stay with amazing views across the water. A short walk from the apartments is the Gordon Hotel we're we had a few drinks and dinner - surf and turf and chicken carbonara, both really tasty with the steak cooked exactly as ordered. The next morning we watched the ships come into the port as we enjoyed a coffee on our balcony. All in all a very lovely visit and worth the few additional kilometres to get here - glad we came.

Great town with all the facilities you need and more, when the weather is good the area thrives and when the weather turns a little for the worse it still turns it on for you and there is plenty to do.

Portland is that place that people seem to like but infrequently visit because it's that bit 'too far' (from Melbourne) for a weekend and that is probably why it's a bit of a special place. I love Portland's buildings, the views and its 'realness' and the fact that you can see a koala in a tree without it attracting a crowd; it's not a confected holiday town. It's fascinating to watch the large port at work and to wander the gardens. The library is a treat with a beautiful reading lounge with harbour-views. We got great coffees and breakfasts from the beach-facing cafes. Dinner options are a bit 'light-on' compared to more touristic towns but we found great food and fantastic, friendly service at Edwards Waterfront and there are also plenty of pubs! There's a useable beach a few hundred metres north of the main shopping area and you can also swim in a designated area of the harbour, which is clearly marked. A short drive beyond the port leads to some beautiful views of some accessible surf (not a large beach but a spot that is popular with surfers on the right day) as well as the smelter and the wind-farm. It's all-go!

I didn't stay in Portland long enough to make any recommendations. But I did have a walk around the city centre which was ok. What I could recommend is the 1hr drive to Mt Gambier during which you drive among pine forests and on a nice sunny day it would be enjoyable.

We like fishing there and visiting the Gannet Colony and Shelly Beach, the RSL does great food. In Winter there is the chance to see whales. The bark chip trucks unloading is interesting to watch. The dahlia display in the botanical gardens is awesome in April/May. The local fish and chip shop in the main street near the post office has the best fresh fish ever.

My comfortable overnight stay to break the inland journey from Adelaide to Melbourne was an excellent choice. It was not long enough to see much more than the gorgeous Bay, averting eyes away from the port constructions at one side. I enjoyed an excellent seafood meal at the nearby beachfront restaurant.

Fantastic place to stay, clean, modern, well thought out accomodation, great value for money. All the amenities you'd expect and more. Great location, parking outside your door, and the owner was friendly and welcoming too. Highly recommend Mariner Motel, of the 4 different motels/hotels we stayed in on our trip, this place was the best by far.

The cabin we rented was excellent - good size, comfy bed. Good cooking and cabin facilities. Park is on the ocean so easy walk to local lighthouse and to shops. Great value for money and probably the best park cabin we had stayed in on our 8000km journey through Victoria and SA. One of the best on the Great Ocean Road for a good price.
