Amazing breakfast and yes Maradona is amazing haha he literally came to save me when I took a wrong turn in the night and ended up on a crazy crazy off road. He texts you a video of how to get there but I don’t recommend driving there in the night as everything will look different and it won’t help much especially if you’re alone w no copilot to help navigate.
Some people say location is far but really unless you are super lazy it is not bad at all it’s fun to walk there and go through the tunnel to the city.

Gjirokaster's must see is the massive castle that has stood the test of time and offers a stunning scenery of the surrounding architecture and lifestyle with a special insight in Albania's history. The Old town pazar has everything for a delicious lunch, or cozy dinner inside or out on the streets and lots of souvenirs. The surrounding area offers great opportunity for easy to medium hikes along old landmarks, like the Ali Pasha Bridge just up the hill, or out into Zagoria National park, and to all-round amazing views, especially when show covers the surrounding mountain ranges during winter. In short, Gjirokaster is a must visit tourist attraction.

Maps don't do justice to the steep hills of this town!
Maps don't do justice to the steep hills of this town! It's spectacularly scenic and you'll work off your food and beverages climbing the cobblestones. The bazaar is very touristy but the sidewalk cafes are lively and it's easy to find good food.
If you're taking a taxi from the bus terminal, walk a few blocks away and avoid the drivers who swarm you when you get off the bus. There are city buses but the schedules are not so regular. Once you are in the old town, it is very walkable - if you leave the stilettos behind. We did a day trip to Butrint via Saranda on public buses, which was long but worthwhile.

Gjirokastra is a beautiful city with so much history and charm. There is something for everyone. While there are many shops, busy bars and upscale restaurants, we enjoyed quieter areas and family run bars, cafes and restaurants. We loved exploring the old town and quaint neighbourhoods around the castle and the house museums and just wandering around the charming streets and laneways. We met many friendly locals.

Certainly worth a visit for the history.
Certainly worth a visit for the history. For a Northern European visitor a unique town, architecture and landscape. Pressure of tourism a bit distracting which we are ourselves responsible for and should be mindful of.

Beautiful historic city.
Beautiful historic city. The castle and cold war bunker are a great way to learn more about the cities history, from ancient times to Communist rule. Beautiful shops, great local restaurants and spectacular valley/mountain views. It felt safe and friendly everywhere. Numerous street dogs, but all friendly and relaxed.

Nice little hotel in the middle of the old town of Gjirokaster. The location could not be better, being right in the middle of the beautiful city center. The terrace where you have breakfast has nice views of the old town. The breakfast was very good, the best that we had in Albania.
The owners were very nice and helpful, and offered tips about what to do in Gjirokaster and Albania.
The rooms were clean, and overall of good quality.
Overall, we had a nice stay in Alsara Guesthouse.
The hotel was located in the historical area of Gjirokaster and it was nothing but lovely. Stone covered almost everything, giving the real traditional atmosphere.
The room was spotless clean equipped with all the necessary facilities for a comfortable stay. Big comfy bed and pillows!
The breakfast was also delicious and the lady who served it very kind and lovely. Would totally recommend this stay!
This hotel is located above the city gjirokastër which is why it has a breathtaking view. Wait until you open up the windows in the morning and feel like you‘ve woken up in heaven, due to the heavy white fog surrounding this place, a very unique experience!
The room was very spacious and also very tidy. The hotel is a short walk to central Gjirokastër and many of the main attractions. The breakfast was also great, and served by Grandpa himself!
