Boasting a balcony with sea views, a private beach area and water sports facilities, Ma'ukele Lodge can be found in Pahoa, close to Kaimu Beach and 21 km from Lava Tree State Monument. What a wonderful spot! This place was beautiful: the garden leads out to the ocean, making for a wonderful morning of sunrise and watching the waves roll in. Breakfast was gorgeous: local fruits, pie and the hosts' own cacao nibs. Our room was lovely and our bed was very comfortable. Raven and Mark and fantastic hosts, we learned a lot from them regarding the local area and enjoyed their recommendations. There is a nearby black sand beach which is swimmable (Kehena) and Isaac Hale Recreational Area is a short drive to enjoy the thermal pools. Our hosts provided beach towels, which was really nice! We were lucky enough to be there on a Wednesday night, so we ventured over to Uncle Roberts for the weekly party: it's a 5 -10 minute walk down the street so you can enjoy a mai tai while listening to local bands and eating local food vendors' fare. We spent two nights in the Pahoa area and enjoyed the space very much.

Offering a garden and sea view, Orchid Tree B&B is situated in Hilo, 100 metres from Honoli'i Beach Park and 3.3 km from The Pacific Tsunami Museum. One of the most beautiful B&Bs I've had the pleasure of staying at. I will remember forever. We were in for a quick, one evening stay after getting engaged in Kona and my boyfriend (fiancé now!) and I could not have asked for a better place to celebrate 1 on 1. As PNW-ers, we love Hilo for its tropical rain. At Orchid Tree, you can look forward to: the most comfy bed (I gasped when I felt the pillows), tall ceilings with beautiful woodwork and a delightful breeze from the screen doors, and so many thoughtful, small touches. Every inch of the room was clean but it still felt homey, not sterile. Coffee, fresh fruit, and carbs in the morning, coupled with a sweet chat with Steve and fellow travelers. This B&B strikes the perfect balance of private and communal. At the end of our stay, my partner ran back in and Steve gave us a list of recs. We then proceeded in heading over to Steve's son's shaved ice shop (Aloha General Co - located at 28-1692 Old Mamalahoa Hwy, Honomu) to get one of the best desserts of our life and more caffeine. Highly recommend 'The Local' shaved ice. Could not have asked for a better stay. We hope to be back someday! For my foodies: For those who are celebrating (life or otherwise), Moon and Turtle was one of the best meals of my life and a trip to Hilo isn't complete without the fries and fry sauce at Hilo Tavern. ENJOY!

Offering a garden and mountain view, Coffee Garden is set in Captain Cook, 6.9 km from Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park and 7.4 km from Kealakekua Bay. A wonderful stay, with fantastic hosts. Such a friendly welcome in an oasis of calm. A little way from Kona for those wanting to hit the town, but for us very worthwhile. Thanks to Ping, Stanley and Max for welcoming us into their home.

We loved our stay here! The room was spotless and Tomami cleaned it every day while we were out. Hand made breakfast was also included which we got to eat in a small breakfast nook with ocean views. This B and B was paradise.

Situated just outside of Hakalau, 20 km from Hilo, Mahana House Country Inn is a non-smoking property and features ocean views, free WiFi access, and free private parking. This was the best hotel ever. Everything was perfect!

Located within 1.7 km of Rainbow Falls and 3.8 km of Lyman Museum & Mission House in Hilo, Old Hawaiian Bed and Breakfast provides accommodation with seating area. Very nice house in a very quiet neighborhood. The room was big and comfortable, super clean. In front of it there was a lovely lanai. We enjoyed it in the evening and we had breakfast there in the morning. Huge backyard that goes all the way to the river. Breakfast was super, varied and delicious! Thank you!
