Great weather, but not many good spots to eat. We found a very nice bed and breakfast - "What a wonderful world" - where the host made us feel very welcomed. The beach was only a few minutes away by car. There was always parking available. Great place to start your daytrips from. A very easy-going environment away from the cookie cutter like expensive resorts.
Familiar chain stores and fast food nearby if needed. We prefer local restaurants, etc, and found ourselves driving to Lahaina and Kaanapali for whale watching, shopping, and other activities. Very convenient to the airport!!
Because of the airport being here, I think, this is where the locals shop. Costco and WalMart are here. Zippy's restaurant is a local favorite and not bad. The Arts and Culture Center near the University is beautiful and had a lovley exhibit in the gallery. There are a couple of beaches in town that come up on the snorkle report. Otherwise, this town is not a hotspot for tourists so much. The Road to Hana kind of starts here, and the more thrifty shopping is here. Buy gas here. The hospital is here.
We just stayed at the hotel near the airport for one night since we arrived late after a long flight and did not feel like driving. Although it was 11 pm it was 2 am for us. So we only stayed the one night at this location and 10 in Lahaina.
The hotel was on the Kahului Harbor with a lovely sandy beach to walk on. There were a number of sail boarders in the harbor, we did swim but found out later the harbor is full of sharks... This hotel is very close to beach enjoyed by locals with sail boarding, wind surfing etc. etc. We stayed there due to the proximity to airport and free shuttle, although the shuttle shut down prior to our arrival at 10:00 p.m. so could not take advantage on arrival. Close to mall and a number of places to eat.
The hotel is very nice, it has a central pool overlooking the sea. The rooms are spacious and clean, offering coffee, tea, beach towels, personal care products (soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion). There is a restaurant right next to it, serving good local dishes, where you get 10% off your bill as hotel guests. There is a parking lot in front of the hotel entrance, for $10/day (+taxes). The staff is very nice and keen to accommodate your requests. We were there on our honeymoon and they set up the room very nicely. The location is very close to the airport, yet is a very curated hotel. Overall a bit expensive, but aligned to the high prices of Maui.
Proximity to the OGG airport, beach access right from the hotel, cleanliness of the hotel.
