Stayed in Cambridge to attend a graduation at Boston University. We were just close enough for it to be a very short drive, but did not have to immediately deal with school traffic. There were many stores and restaurants nearby, with good access to major roads to simplify travel.
Perfect location if you’re not renting a car, which is expensive and a hassle to park in Boston. It’s a very short walk to the Silver Line bus (free) to the Airport subway station, where you get to most anywhere in the city. You can also get off at the very next stop and transfer to the commuter rail to North Station or Salem and Gloucester. The area around the hotel looks rough, but I never felt threatened or uncomfortable, even when returning around midnight from a Red Sox game. The van service to and from the airport was great, also. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel restaurant and bar was still closed due to the pandemic, which is completely understandable. There is a Dunkin’ across the street for coffee and several other food options within walking distance. I am planning to return to Boston next summer with my grandchildren and this will be my first hotel option.
Our stay at the Crystal Cove Inn was nice. The office and check in staff were exceptional and went above and beyond to ensure that you had what you needed. The room we stayed in appeared to have been recently renovated and had a small full kitchen with granite counter top. The room although somewhat small was adequate and comfortable for two people. It had a nice harbor view. The grounds were well kept and the pool was nice to swim in. The inn is fairly close to the airport but the sound of the air conditioner masked most of the sound of the airplanes taking off and landing. That fact could be an issue in the fall when an air conditioner isn't needed or used. Overall I would recommend staying here. It's far away enough to find peace and tranquility but close enough to everything if you want something to do.
Boston is a great city to visit, especially if you are interested in American history. All our great revolutions started there and, if we are lucky, maybe a new one. You can follow a historical or hysterical (or both) guide on the Freedom Trail, climb aboard the U.S.S. Constitution, see witches in Salem, visit past presidents, from John Adams to JFK, have a beer at the Cheers bar, or simply enjoy a lobstah suppah. If you happen to be there in June, you should certainly turn gay for a day and take part in the Pride Parade or visit a university, as there are more of them in the city than Starbucks. Fun places, but be smaht.
Cambridge is a great place for sightseeing and history. My son graduated from Harvard University and the city has rich spots for viewing in conjunction with the university. The Coop has all of the Harvard gear and gifts to take back to family, as well as the Harvard Store. We ate at Tatte, a nice breakfast and coffee restaurant. Uber is easy as well as short walks around the squares. Cambridge is a beautiful city and I can't wait to visit again.
We didn't visit Chelsea during the day, just got some take out food one of the nights (there are options not too far from the hotel). For what we saw around the hotel, it didn't strike me as a particularly beautiful area, but it's a short drive to Boston, and very close to the airport (but we didn't hear any plane noise.) We didnt explore public transportation options to Boston, but my impession is that can be a hustle. However it'ss close to Boston, so if you have a car is a short drive and my guess is that a taxi or Uber should be affordable too.
