Hallowell (2.5 miles from Augusta State Airport)
2.9 miles from Old Fort Western in Hallowell, Widow Avery House provides accommodations with access to a sauna and hot tub. Soooo many thoughtful details! I’ve never stayed in a property where my every thought/need seemed answered. And so many luxuries (the shower is marble! There’s a full work desk & printer!) and creative (you have Alexa, essential oil diffuser, Himalayan salt foot rest!) there was also a window fan, a small fan by my bed…. Nice large smart tele. Walk to everything in town. The host communication was very thorough. They also have kayaks & bikes you can use! My only regret is that I wasn’t booked longer, Will definitely be back! I want to address a previous ‘sketchy outside’ comment that made us a bit nervous at first but turned out to be nothing at all. There are a couple of historic homes in the process of being quietly restored in the surrounding neighbourhood (the whole town is a historic district) so if you aren’t used to that they could look a bit messy, but the Widow Avery house itself is beautifully restored, just lovely. Don’t miss this hidden gem

Jared is an excellent manager and the hotel is run in a professional and efficient manner. The room service staff always make sure you have everything you need. The ladies are hard-working and probably underappreciated... not by the staff, but it's just that kind of a job. They are excellent representatives of great hospitality. ~ ~~SUPER comfy beds, sheets etc always Chris clean and smell good, and the pillows are amazing. I slept so well. Ty! ~Vera 😄
I had a memorial in Gardiner, and wanted to be nearby. I stayed just one night. Hallowell is a lovely town between Gardiner and Augusta, on the Kennebec River. This place is in a great location in Hallowell. It's near Slate's, a great bakery & restaurant, downtown, and close to the river. A nice town to see and walk around, if I had more time.
price change with out being told a head of time booked on booking.com and one weekend date was a lot higher in price after I got the bill room was not cleaned the following day had to be requested 24 hrs. in advance
Hallowell was not my destination, just a place to spend a few nights while I attended a workshop elsewhere. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a quaint little town with shops and restaurants along the Kennebec River waterfront. There is a community waling/biking trail that is paved, and seats lined up along a waterfront area for relaxing. The old buildings and town are pleasant. It did not have the congestion of the coastal tourist towns.
Augusta - great gas prices, we came from New York, My suggestion is to try local places not chain restaurants. Check out Ottos on the River for dining. Great food/atmosphere. There's a herbal metaphysical store and a rock/gem store also on water street. Hopefully government revitalizes the area, street people asking for money is bad for business. We had breakfast at the Countryside Diner which is about 5 minutes away. So good. Then we stopped at Buranos in Hollowell for wood-fired pizza. Nice town only 7 minutes away. Use your Google Maps on your phone, we had no problem getting around. The only thing I hated was those roundabouts. There's also several Hannafords within minutes. Love this grocery store. Only thing to avoid is Wyndham Days Inn. There's more modern style hotels in the direct area.
Charming small town, with several good restaurants, a few shops, and good ice cream and antiques store. Very close to Gardiner (another small and charming town), Augusta, and easy drive to Portland. Parking is tight on weekends.
