Pennautier is a beautiful town. Very quiet, but many beautiful things to see. The Boulangerie just down the road from La Beytina makes the BEST caramel muffins I have ever had. I also recommend the quiche – YUM. We were so excited to stumble across a food truck in town serving New Zealand and Pacific Islander food! I recommend the fish and chips and Honey Soy Chicken. As we were in town for a wedding, we didn't spend much time sight seeing in Pennautier or Carcassonne. Next time we return, we will definitely stay at La Beytina, so we can tour the area a bit more.
Carcassonne Castle is definitely worth the visit even with the crowds. It is a well-preserved walled Castle with many lanes to wonder through, shops to explore and restaurants to try. You only need an afternoon or morning to visit it, but if you wanted hang out longer and people watch or fantasize life back in Medieval times - it lends itself to that as well.
Carcassonne is well worth a visit! The citadel is within easy reach of the town and is stunning. Once we had visited it several times, as well as the Musee des Beaux Arts and down town, there was time to venture to Narbonne by train. What a very interesting town! We did a guided tour of the Gothic cathedral and surrounding area (in French only), starting at the Town Hall and also visited the market. Food in Carcassonne was hit and miss - a bit too much on the 'fast food' spectrum. Narbonne, however, did not disappoint on that score.
We were attracted to Carcassone by pictures of the castle. It is in fact a reconstructed structure, mainly given over to shops and restaurants. The new town is rather run down, with many empty shops and even Les Halles was virtually closed. People were friendly. Luckily we decided to have 2 days in Toulouse in the middle of our stay.
We loved Carcassonne and highly recommend it as a romantic or family destination. Beautiful, fairytale views of the city walls from almost everywhere. I must have taken hundreds of glorious photos! Fascinating history about the Cathars, their intriguing religion and the medieval way of life. Brilliant for children as well as adults. Rue Trivalle, just outside the city walls is very good for restaurants and bars. We stayed nearby and it was the perfect location. Friendly locals.
Loved our trip to Carcassonne. The old town is beautiful and has lots of history to familiarize yourself with. There is also a host of beautiful photo opportunities and more restaurants than you can count and they all serve very good food. A long weekend was perfect for us.
