Oamaru oasis of delight. Loved seeing the blue penguins in the evening and even walking home with 3 who then made their way back to their nests for the night. The shops are delightful, so many boutique and artisan products to peruse. Steampunk museum is a must and go there before wandering around Oamaru, as you can spot lots more steampunk influences in Oamaru.

Cucina restaurant and the Tees Street Café were as good as ever with excellent food and service. Shopping in the town was also extremely pleasant with great local service throughout despite the Christmas rush.

A town with a surprise.
A town with a surprise. The Victorian precinct had lots of very interesting shops and artist studio/shops. You meet a variety of interesting people as you visit each and chat to them. The playground near the Harbour was also nicely designed and creatively thought out. Its even got a hamster wheel for people. We missed the Victorian festival by a day and also missed the farmer's market. Would have loved to see those 2.

Awesome place - interesting, quirky.
Awesome place - interesting, quirky. The people I came in contact with at shops, cafes, restaurants & the Victorian precinct were all were welcoming, helpful and pleasant. The public gardens were beautiful and I'm not really a garden tourist. Easily walkable town, traffic not too heavy.
Favourite places - Victorian precinct, Steampunk, plans for art installations along waterfront, all the amazing buildings along the main street
Great coffee and food - Badger & Mackeral cafe and Star & Garter restaurant

It was astounding the old architecture in the town, and it spoke of enormous wealth in the town in years past. Quite a fascinating precinct to walk around, and one day it will hopefully become more alive with businesses, cafes and tourism. It's quite the ghost town after dark, people on the streets are scarce and it's an odd energy, almost like the town has been abandoned. The Brewery down near the waterfront was a relaxed venue for a beer and a pizza.
