The Brydone had a lovely beachtown hotel vibe, quite retro but with spacious rooms, lovely bathrooms and walk in showers, plenty of complimentary toiletries, mini fridge, teas and coffees etc, and it was always a warm cosy respite after a chilly day by the sea watching penguins :)
The staff were lovely and welcoming, and the hotel offered free wifi and a good selection of TV channels.
Although we didn't go the adjoined bar and restaurant it also seemed really nice. I really liked the location of Brydone Hotel as it's near all the conveniences you might need with plenty of cafes/pubs on the doorstep, but also just a pleasant walk away from the seafront and the blue penguin colony.

The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others).
We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀
The building looks more like a house than a hotel. There were many decorations in the house, especially decirations of penguins, which made it very lovley. The room was large and the bed was very comfortable. There was also a massage chair.
The accommodation is also very close to all the major attractions in Oamaru.
Absolutely amazing. Very clean and comfortable with tremendous decor. A lot of money and thought has gone into this quirky fabulous hotel. We do a lot of travelling and this is up with the best anywhere. Total attention to detail, very, very classy. Hope we can still get a room next time we are in Oamaru!
Everything was very good. It is on the main street of Oamaru but we were not disturbed by noise. The bed was very comfortable and the unit had good facilities. It was very good value for money. The host was very friendly and communicative.
The house was absolutely gorgeous and Dawn was a wonderful host, breakfast was a continental breakfast and was absolutely delicious. I can't wait for our next stay in Oamaru!
