Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.
Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.
Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.
Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.
The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.
A nice mediterranean island. Difficult to get there from some locations (from Germany is easy). Just go for vacations if you want to relax enjoy night life and restaurants, beaches, boat trips, and for me the most important the Minoian culture, the Archaelogical museum and the Knossos palace bring a nice piece of cultural and historical information about our civilization.

The harbour area is attractive and offers great views of the city if you walk to the end of the Jetty past the Rocco a Mare Fortress, apart from the Heraklion archaeological museum I would strongly suggest the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology by Kotsanas which was a (3 min) walk from town down Epimenidou road , its small but quite honestly the best museum we've been too, informative and great fun.

The city is both modern and historic.
The city is both modern and historic. There are many places of interest like the Venetian Castle and the Archaeological Museum which is a must. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and the local delicacies are very tasty. Moving around the city centre is easy as almost everything is within walking disatnce (there is a large pedestrian area) but for some places you might consider hiring a taxi. Bear in mind that traffic is usually heavy and parking is difficult.

Very friendly people; the shop keepers were not pushy for sales. Streets were mostly clean. My partner was awed by the history of the town and the island as a whole so we plan another visit next year. We found transportation easy; cabs readily available. Most restaurants had a nice variety of food selection. We found two "special" restaurants where we ate four times.

nice city to visit, but maximum 2 days - you can easily sightsee everything in there during that time. Its very well communicated - airport around 15min by bus to center, nice sandy beaches around 20 min by bus from center. Good restaurants with tasty food.
We stayed one night at the hotel, it is the perfect location, right in the middle of Heraklion. Can just pop out and wander around the town with lots of shops, cafes and tavernas. Easy to check in, the room was great and the staff friendly. Breakfast was also great. I would highly recommend and would stay there again in my next trip to Crete. The hotel booked for us a taxi to the airport the next day only took 15 minutes to get there)
Sofia ist an average hotel close to the airport. It has no highlights, everything is as it should be – but also there is nothing to complain about, which makes it better than most other midrange hotels we encountered on Crete.
Everything’s in the details; we had never before seen a hotel owner put as much effort into making our stay as perfect as possible. We spent 8 days in Crete in about 5 different places and 7Rizes was definitely our favourite.
Perfect location. Small walk to the city centre and near the Port parking which was only €3,- per day. Nice museum in the street near hotel. Breakfast on the 6th floor with viewings on to the venetion fort.
