Dar es Salaam has changed a lot in the past 5-10 years.
Dar es Salaam has changed a lot in the past 5-10 years. Road infrastructure projects have made the city much more manageable as opposed to spending hours and hours in traffic. Lots of good new restaurants. But of course, the southern beaches (south of the ferry) are the best.....clean, quiet, safe.

Dar es Salaam offers a mix from nice beaches, night life, city tours and its central to other stunning areas like Zanzibar but also nearby smaller islands like Mbudya and Bongoyo. The neighbourhood especially around Masaki feels quite safe day and night. The infrastructure is much improved with electric train, the Bus Rapid Transit, Uber and Bolt also make transport quite easy and cheap in Dar.
Only challenge not a problem is most people speak Swahili and english is less used. Google translate typically comes handy a bit here.

If you need move in town during peak hours, choose a motor bike, prices are always negociable and bargaining is part of the culture.
I love the town at night. It is safe and well organized for a big city. People are exceptionally friendly, but to really get by you absolutely need to speak Swahili.

Dar es salaam has been a fairytale!
Dar es salaam has been a fairytale!
It's such a big and vibrant city.
I got around town by using Bolt, which was an easy and effective way to move around town.
I do not recommend going to the market alone, I was quickly overwhelmed by the pushy sellers, they weren't rude or anything, just a bit too pushy and they definitely hustle on the price, so always negotiate the price as long as you are considering buying the product.
We went to eat at many places, f.ex: samaki samaki, wavuvi, choma hut, cape town free fish market and it was lovely.
I stayed in a hotel without pool but gladly paid 20k tsh to use Golden tulips pool 1-2 times.
I'm not here to tourist, I'm here attending a wedding so didn't do much tourist stuff but rather hanged out with my friend and his local family and friends, so I got to see both the real and tourist side of Tanzania.
Dar es salaam is interesting, full of life, busy and beautiful!
I'm definitely coming back.

We enjoyed our room, the lcation, clean and well maintained hotel, nice restaurants and big playground ( 4 usd pr child pr day) . clean beach and extremely friendly staff, let me highlight. Peter and Mustafa, to young well trained ambitious young waiters in the restaurant and the chef in the morning making your eggs , they make you feel highly welcome and always with a smile learning your habbits , so they know what you like and want without asking them more than the first day, 5 star service from these 3 guys THANK YOU !
This is truly a home away from home, for someone who is looking for an authentic experience, with all you need, but without any luxury. The staff is extremely friendly, and Stella is the best host. People from the neighbourhood and guests alike come to the little restaurant. They have good, Tanzanian food. This is one of the most special experiences I ever had, and I was extremely lucky to find it. I can warmely recommend it, and will make sure to come back when I visit Dar es Salaam the next time.
The hotel is in the city centre, near to the harbour and ferry terminals (ferryboat to Zanzibar). It’s very clean, good new furniture, very fast lifts, good breakfast and charming staff
Excellent cheap/good value hotel for a city centre stopover. Ideal for access to the Zanzibar ferries which are just a few minutes walk. Good restaurants nearby too.
