At the foot of Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the country’s top ski resorts. The Bavarian style of its Alpine chalets includes beautiful flowers lining every balcony, and colourful frescoes adorning the outsides of houses.
The varied skiing and snowboarding in the surrounding Alps is based mainly on blue and red runs. To ski on the Zugspitze glacier you take a train up to the mountain then a cable car down to the slopes. The summit itself offers magnificent views of the valleys below, provided you’re lucky enough to get a break in the clouds.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a former host of the Winter Olympics and the World Alpine Ski Championships. It also has a ski jump that forms part of the world cup of that sport. In summer hiking is the most popular activity and a lengthy route leads up to King’s House on Schachen, a supposed castle that looks more like a house.
It was built for Ludwig II, the eccentric king behind the region’s most impressive castle – Neuschwanstein to the north-west of Garmisch. The road between them passes by Oberammergau, famous for its 10-yearly Passion Plays.
Accommodation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Booking.com includes 4-star hotels near the train station, traditional guest houses near Partnach Gorge, and cheap apartments with parking.

GaPa is very beautiful town with lots of things to do.
GaPa is very beautiful town with lots of things to do. Outdoor activities are probably the main reason to get there, there's are lots of routes to hike or rent a bike and go cycling. Zugspitze is a place to visit of course, but other mountains are definitely worth visiting too. City feels safe and populated, no dark shallow streets. When you get there as a tourist you pay 3 €/day to your accommodation, and you get the Guest Card that allows you to travel with the local buses for free. The places are though very much within walking distance almost everywhere.

We enjoyed the location in Partenkirchen best because it was more quiet than Garmisch. The bus line enabled us to go where we wanted. Including the cog rail to Zugspitze, Partnachklamm and Eisbee. We had dinner more than once at Gasthof Zum Rassen on Ludwigstrasse because the food was authentic and the owner "Barbara" was not only a talented chef, but welcomed us warmly. Also on Friday evenings the local children dance authentic German dances for the visitors at 7pm in from of the restaurant on Ludwigstrasse. We could walk to the Wank cable car and had a scenic breakfast there. We would love to return to GAP.

Our family recently spent four delightful days in Garmisch-...
Our family recently spent four delightful days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and it was an experience to remember! This charming Bavarian town is incredibly easy to navigate, making it a breeze to explore all its wonderful sites. The weather was simply perfect in the middle of summer.
The public transportation system is efficient and conveniently located, which made getting around and venturing into the surrounding areas hassle-free by bus, train, foot or bike. It's also pet-friendly which is perfect for your traveling furry companion.
One of the highlights of our stay was the abundance of fantastic restaurants and cafes. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Bavarian cuisine or something more international, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Each meal was a culinary delight, and the cozy cafes provided the perfect spots to relax and soak in the local atmosphere and sample the various selections of beer and spritz. Of particular to highlight were the wonderful Gasthaus zur Schranne which by far was our favorite, Hoffman's Bistro & Wafflehouse, and Cafe Max. Just be sure to call ahead for reservations as some of these places can be quite popular.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen also serves as an excellent home base for exploring the stunning natural beauty of the region. From the majestic Zugspitze to the serene Eibsee, there are countless opportunities for outdoor adventures. The town itself is surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, making every moment feel like a postcard come to life.
Overall, my stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was nothing short of wonderful. It’s a destination that offers the perfect blend of convenience, culinary delights, and natural beauty. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable getaway from the busy city!

We arrived in the evening, and had a very smooth check in. We have enjoyed a lovely dinner at the hotel and the food was amazing. We had breakfast included with room and it was a delicious one to start the day. The Car park was very convenient although I find it a bit pricey for 12 euros a day.
Beautiful, modern, spacious apartment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen right beside the main train station. Easy access to Zugspitze train line. Beautiful café and bakery downstairs for breakfast and lunch. Central to shops, restaurants, and old parts of the town.
The room was styled in typical Bayern furniture and art. The views over Garmisch-Partenkirchen were amazing. The walk up to the location was wonderful as well. The breakfast was fresh and coffee/eggs were made to order upon request.
