At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

Playa del Carmen is a resort.
Playa del Carmen is a resort. It is about shopping, eating and the beach … possibly in that order. Not for you if you are looking to commune with nature. Not if you seek to experience the cultural treasures of Mexico. Good for people watching, party times, vibrant nightlife.
I walked almost the entire famous 5th Avenida and found it rather boring and generic. But, from Playa you can get to fantastic places on day trips. Organized tours, car, or even by the ADO bus.

We have been to Playa del Carmen many times so we love to go for short vacation trips. It is a very busy tourist town with a lot going on so it is perfect for group trips and people that like to go out, shop, try restaurants and bars and Playa has some great beaches although often very busy. The town of Playa is loud at night so if you don't like music etc. I would recommend staying in Playacar or a resort just outside of town.

I loved being able to walk from my room to swim in the ocean! The shower at the beach took care of any sand and saltwater. This was my first time swimming in the ocean. The resort was within walking distance of 5th street which was the place to go for music, street dancers, shopping of every kind, street venders, and a large variety of places to eat.

Basically, it's a lovely place to shop and eat but beware of what happens in the tequila shop. We bought two bottles of basic, flavoured liquor and were told the price was over MXN 9000. I told them that it was a ludicrous price which was then lowered immediately to 5000 for the 2 bottles. I said i would pay less in London and he said "What will you pay?". I offered 2500, which was accepted without argument. Even then, I probably paid far too much.

I love Playa del Carmen, because it has all the great beaches that Cancun offers, but has the amazing 5th avenue of so many blocks just for tourists. Great food, great entertainment and the beach is close. Walking to where you want is very easy. It's the gem of a city with the small town feel and friendly locals. You get so much more with your time here then in Cancun or Cozumel.

The staff were very nice and while the hotel is downtown Playa del Carmen, it is in a quiet area. It is your basic OYO hotel, clean comfy beds, reception and 24 hour security, daily housekeeping, free drinking water / coffee, hot showers with good water pressure, small fridge and very good internet. The person at reception spoke good English and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. Good old Mexican hospitality!
Spacious apartments with full functioning kitchen. Seems to be newly renovated and very clean.
Good location, in walking distance to nice restaurants and busier Quinta avenida. Beach is one block away and hotel parking is provided.
Amazing roof top pools with great view over playa del Carmen, also great to have some cocktails at the roof top bar.
It is quiet at night, which makes it very pleasant to sleep.
Very nice hotel in the centre of Playa del Carmen. Very close to the main street. Very clean and very nice big room.
Staff very friendly and always smiling.
Definately I would stay there again if ever go to Playa again
The hotel is beautiful, one of the best interior designs I´ve ever seen. Right on the beach, all rooms offer exceptional views. The food, in terms of quality, was exceptionally good. Also the drinks were well prepared.
This is a lovely small hotel right on the beachfront. Very welcoming, family friendly with sun loungers on the beach. Great staff, always helpful and have time to stop for a chat and give you advice.
