Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

First time visiting York and what a city it is.
First time visiting York and what a city it is. We felt that 2 nights was just about right, there is enough to and see. A little pricy if you like a drink but it is what it is. Everything is within walking distance which we loved. Would visit again

York is compact enough to be able walk around.
York is compact enough to be able walk around. There are plenty of shops plus out of town Designer Centre, museums, restaurants and historic pubs. The local bus service allows you to travel a bit further.
It is very vibrant and busy and some places can get very crowded.

I was only in York for 1 day. Not nearly enough.
I was only in York for 1 day. Not nearly enough. So much to see and some attractions take quite a bit of time to enjoy. My next visit will be better planned and I will wear more comfortable shoes. Never knew it was duvh a nice city. Plenty of places to eat and drink, some popular names and other smaller shops as well.

Great city, very historical and interesting.
Great city, very historical and interesting. Easy to get around. Parking is a nightmare so I would recommend somewhere to stay and park then walk into the centre. Park and ride options would also be a good idea if you are only visiting for the day.
There are plenty of pubs and restaurants available, we found York to be a bit more expensive than other places in England but I guess that is the nature of big tourist destinations.

I should have gone straight to Whitby.
I should have gone straight to Whitby. Staying in York for one night was a mistake although I enjoyed a walk around some parts of the city wall. Thanks to the misinformation on the maps posted on lamp posts around the city, the location of the Visitors Information Centre was incorrect. Nothing on the door of the old centre gave information about the new location, local people had no idea where it was. I spent a good hour walking around trying to find it. I did not find the staff particularly helpful once I got there. Comments like, "take a taxi" and The Coastal Rambler is only £.. when I asked about using my bus pass. I prefer to make my own decisions as to what I spend my money on, definitely not taxis! I found your city map for £1 unhelpful as no street index given, what a contrast to £1 spent in Whitby Visitors Centre which covered Whitby, Filey and Scarborough, all with street indexes. Please forward these comments to the City Council.
Michel couldn’t have been friendlier. Very helpful and happy to take the time to chat and suggest places to go.
Breakfast was fantastic
Very relaxed atmosphere. It’s not the fanciest of hotels but then it doesn’t claim to be a 5 star.
Had a great stay and if we go back to York again we’d be highly likely to stay there again.
The house was beautifully set up and looked like a 5 star hotel
The kitchen was exceptionally well equipped and lacked nothing.
It was spotlessly clean and my granddaughter and I were very comfortable. The beds were wonderfully comfortably.
Everything that York had to offer us was close by. We had a perfect few days.
Host was superb very friendly and welcoming. Allowed us to check in early and saved us a parking space (which was a big issue for us). Hotel seems a little old fashioned but that's part of its charm. Location fantastic to walk into York city centre 10 mins and we were at the shambles.
