A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

This was our third trip and a fourth is not far off. Lots of galleries, tours of Parliament House and the War Memorial is especially poignant if you attend the daily last post.
The city centre has plenty of places to shop and eat and we enjoyed a beer at King O'Malleys.

But a tad run down overall and not as up to date as I'd imagined
Excepting for the daunting National Archives National Museums and National Galleries but also the Australian War Memorial - so vip to our understanding of Australia's historic base

Canberra is fun to make fun of, but it's a great town.
Canberra is fun to make fun of, but it's a great town. It's beautiful, with so much to see and do, and quite easy to get around once you get the hang of the buses.
A recent trip included two full days at the Australian War Memorial (with much left to see another time) and Old Parliament house. A future trip will be needed for Questacon and the National Museum. From prior experience the Zoo is greatly underrated, too.
I've stayed here at least five times and this latest visit matched up to all my previous visits. It's a cosy, exceptionally well run small hotel. Staff friendly, very professional and the hotel is near most of Canberra's best attractions. I also love the two common rooms. They are comfortable, well appointed, light and have lovely views.
I returned to this hotel for two reasons, 1. location - excellent area of Canberra, close to great eateries, lake and city and 2. the bed I had my first stay was soooo comfortable, but was a little let down as the bed the second visit wasn't the same quality. Still have no hesitations staying here in future.
We had a family get together and dinner. Great atmosphere, room and meal. A place to recharge the car was a bonus.
A step back in time as I remember the Hyatt as Canberra Hotel with a public Bar at the back, tilled floor which made it easy to clean and hose out the blood in its rougher days.
The apartment was comfortable. The bed was superb. The meal at the restaurant was delicious and well priced. The staff were welcoming. We have been three times to this hotel now,and will continue to stay when we visit Canberra.
great hotel stayed there last four times we have visited Canberra. was easy to find, close to town centre and eating venues. quiet at night. love staying there. secure car parking as well
