Sometimes the vibe about Marseille can seem a little off...
Sometimes the vibe about Marseille can seem a little off putting - especially to first time visitors . And yes the surface appearance of downtown Marseille can be gritty urban and layered in graffiti - but in the areas we walked in - including early mornings and evenings it was perfectly safe - but like any busy city take sensible precautions with belongings etc. We loved the energy and diversity of the city - from the historic port and Panier district to the bustling Noailles street market and for evenings Cour Julien is packed with bars and restaurants . Two days / nights was not really long enough to take it all in.

Marseille won't be for everyone as it's a bit rough round the edges, but this is part of it's charm. You can see it's creative/rebellious spirit in the street art around Cours Julien and beyond. It's great for exploring and finding quirky areas as well as stereotypically French 'village' squares. It's a place that isn't afraid to experiment with the space architecturally and creatively. It's location also assures that whatever the building, it's bathed in sunshine, especially a dawn and sunset.

Hard to give a fair review as it was off season and I was there for a very short time.
However, I did not find the people of Marseille to be very friendly, in particular, the staff in many restaurants were quite brusque which was surprising as you'd think they would welcome the business in the off season. Once I got out of Marseille the french were lovely but Marseille itself not so much. Shame, as it reinforced the reputation of the french being standoffish.
Having said that it was easy to get around Marseille and I did have some very good meals.

The afternoon was spent at Fort-St.Jean and the Mucem museum which were fascinating with great views of the harbour.
The adjacent Cosquer Méditerranée exhibition of a nearby undersea cave system with prehistoric remains also looks interesting.
A No.60 bus runs from there and the port up to Basilica of Notre-Dame-of-la-Garde. On the day of the visit the sky was blue with clear views for miles, and the sunset was a treat.

A wonderful city. The old port is lovely. A daytrip to the island for hiking and lunch is a must. The museum des Beaux Arts is spectacular - incredible architecture and fountain. Great cathedrals and fun halles for a variety of food and great wine.

Great hotel, clean room with Japanese toilets.
The breakfast is included.
Close to the Vieux Port and other places of interest. Many buses options.
The hotel is close to the train station so it’s easy if you want to travel a bit around Marseille (I definitely advise you to check on Aix en Provence if you have time).
You can let your suitcase in the hotel even after checking out.
We felt very welcome indeed on our arrival and the receptionists were all exceptionally helpful with recommendations, communication and storing our luggage. The apartment was spotlessly clean and well supplied with all the kitchen utensils we could need. The position within Marseille is perfect, being only a short walk to the Vieux Port, many restaurants and supermarkets.
This hotel has an excellent location at the old port. Rooms are standard and clean. The best of this hotel is the rooftop bar with a splendid view of the old port and the church Notre Dame de la Garde on the hill top. Many restaurants are around the corner. The metro is at the old port with a quick connection to the Station Marseille Saint Charles.
Great hotel directly on the vieux port in the heart of marseille. special thanks to Samantha at reception, a real gem and a great person...carrying on the tradition of provencal welcome. Refreshing in a world of hospitality drones.
The location in the center of Marseille, 50 meters from the Vieux Port. And they can keep your luggage the day you leave in their office so you enjoy your last moment without it.
