Great city with history, which gives it a bad reputation and keeps some people away. The amount of graffiti seen around does not help. It has a rough side to it but do your research, stay cautious and careful and you can enjoy the lovely old port and surrounding areas and more.

Sometimes the vibe about Marseille can seem a little off putting - especially to first time visitors . And yes the surface appearance of downtown Marseille can be gritty urban and layered in graffiti - but in the areas we walked in - including early mornings and evenings it was perfectly safe - but like any busy city take sensible precautions with belongings etc. We loved the energy and diversity of the city - from the historic port and Panier district to the bustling Noailles street market and for evenings Cour Julien is packed with bars and restaurants . Two days / nights was not really long enough to take it all in.

Marseille won't be for everyone as it's a bit rough round the edges, but this is part of it's charm. You can see it's creative/rebellious spirit in the street art around Cours Julien and beyond. It's great for exploring and finding quirky areas as well as stereotypically French 'village' squares. It's a place that isn't afraid to experiment with the space architecturally and creatively. It's location also assures that whatever the building, it's bathed in sunshine, especially a dawn and sunset.

Hard to give a fair review as it was off season and I was there for a very short time.
However, I did not find the people of Marseille to be very friendly, in particular, the staff in many restaurants were quite brusque which was surprising as you'd think they would welcome the business in the off season. Once I got out of Marseille the french were lovely but Marseille itself not so much. Shame, as it reinforced the reputation of the french being standoffish.
Having said that it was easy to get around Marseille and I did have some very good meals.

The afternoon was spent at Fort-St.Jean and the Mucem museum which were fascinating with great views of the harbour.
The adjacent Cosquer Méditerranée exhibition of a nearby undersea cave system with prehistoric remains also looks interesting.
A No.60 bus runs from there and the port up to Basilica of Notre-Dame-of-la-Garde. On the day of the visit the sky was blue with clear views for miles, and the sunset was a treat.

Do not book with Vieux port! I read different reviews and decided to try for myself. This was the wrong decision. Key handover was not possible on the night I booked. A password was not shared so keys were not handed out. At 5 in the morning I had to book another hotel for one night until this issue has been resolved. The hotel night cost me 90€. No refund has been paid by Vieux port. Terrible customer service. Honestly skip this place!
This apartment is so beautiful, so comfortable and so tastefully decorated that you may struggle to leave it to see the sights of Marseille! The location is perfect - just a couple of minutes' walk to the lively Vieux Port and very convenient for exploring the city on foot. This is my second time staying here and I will definitely be back.
Great location next to the vieux port, a lot of restaurants, coffee shops and shops. The hotel is clean, one of the receptionists was very nice (had glasses). The rooftop bar is very nice, with beautiful view, nice meals. Breakfast is recommended for the view in the morning and not expensive.
Rooms are large.
The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance from the city Gare, and if you're in the mood, you can also walk from there to some touristic spots like the Vieux Port, Le Panier, etc. The hotel itself is great, good cost-benefit, the room is small but comfortable, and we had a pleasant stay.
Staff were wonderful, nice facilities which were very clean. Towels provided for the pool, good hairdryer.
Beach is short walk with a supermarket, shops and cafes up behind the hotel. Vieux port slightly longer walk.
