FAQs about hotels in Helsinki

Nordic Daughter of the Baltic

Scratch beneath the small-town surface of Helsinki and you will find a cosmopolitan metropolis buzzing with a lively attitude and plenty of excitement. The relatively short-lived summer offers the best chance to appreciate the outdoors and sit on one of the popular café terraces, or even hit the Hietaniemi Beach, all of which can be enjoyed during the 20 hours of daylight.

Strolling around the streets of Helsinki will reveal an Empire-style of architecture, comparable to St. Petersburg. The greatest example of this is the green-domed Lutheran Cathedral which rises proudly out of the centre of Senate Square. From here the main shopping street of Aleksanterinkatu, affectionately known as Aleksi, runs towards Mannerheimintie and contains the largest department store in Scandinavia, called Stockmann. The up-market boulevard of Esplanadi runs alongside and is packed with exclusive boutiques.

Lovers of Nordic design will be thrilled by the Design Museum and the Ateneum Art Museum. Nature is in abundance on the beautiful archipelago which lies along the coast. A must-see is the Baltic fortress of Suomenlinna, where you just might forget you’re in a big city.

Whether you head to a sauna or amusement park when you disembark from Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, with over 65 hotels, apartments and hostels, Booking.com has the perfect place for your Scandinavian stay.

Helsinki is a very quiet, yet fascinating city, with a great atmosphere especially during winter holidays. The city centre is easy to navigate (small but dense), and full of attractions like Kauppatori local market, unconventional churches like Temppeliaukio, malls, and lovely cafes (Fazer is very recommended and typical). The local transport is very efficient and well organized, and allows reaching easily the Helsinki zoo (which is open all year round) and the Suomelinna fortress (on a separate island). Finnish people are very quiet, reserved, but also welcoming and caring. Enjoy :)

There is lots to do and see in and around Helsinki.

There is lots to do and see in and around Helsinki. There's beautiful and historic buildings to see, museums to visit, lots of shopping and some very nice restaurants. A nice shopping center is Tripla and in there is a restaurant to recommend, called The Schnitzel. We took a quick snowboarding trip to Serena, which is just 30 min drive from Helsinki.

Helsinki is a beautiful well laid city.

Helsinki is a beautiful well laid city. A very lge city with the main area by the bay the best to see with a lovely parkway shops & restaurants. Rail & bus way close by. The white Cathedral is lovely outside but plain inside. We were there in winter, short days 10-4. Beautiful lite park & streets. Hop on hop off bus not worth it runs from 11-4, one stop 11 &1pm. The summer months much better for tourism. The food hall down near the bay on the right side, well worth a visit. Food & especially Alcohol is very expensive.

Visiting Helsinki during the Christmas period was a truly magical experience. The beautiful Christmas lights and unique decorations enhanced the city's festive atmosphere, which filled every corner with warmth and holiday cheer. Exploring the Helsinki Cathedral and the Uspenski Cathedral offered a wonderful mix of spirituality and architectural beauty. It was delightful to stroll down Esplanade Avenue with its elegant shops and cozy holiday vibe. Dinner at the iconic Kappeli Restaurant was a highlight, offering delicious food in a charming setting. Helsinki's holiday soul made the trip unforgettable, seamlessly blending tradition, culture, and festive magic.

Beds were comfortable, the room exactly as described and depicted in the booking. The staff was very friendly. Copious breakfast, and the location is excellent for visiting the city. Right next to the train station and shopping mall, within walking distance of the city center and harbour. We used the nearby underground parking. Not cheap, but similar to other locations in Helsinki and very convenient.
