The room was spacious enough, clean and adequately equipped. Staff was very helpful. They even offered me a bigger room that was available, with no extra charge. Breakfast could have been better, regarding variety and quality. The area is very convenient as it is really close to the train station, but could feel a little sketchy in the evening.

Hugging the Ligurian coastline, Genoa boasts Europe’s largest old town and Italy’s largest seaport. As birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.
By the old port (Porto Antico) are several bars and restaurants serving the local speciality – pesto. Other Genoese favourites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade – Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighbourhood, where colourful boats bob up and down.
The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.
South is the old town with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.
As you approach Genova Airport look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the ‘Superb City’. Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodation, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

Pra' - Voltri is at short distance from the homonymous motorway exit. Pra’ is famous for its basil, the true and only original Genoese, which can be purchased directly from the producer on site. Pra' and Voltri are a good starting point for getting to know Genoa and for excursions to the entire Ligurian coast.
In Voltri there are free and paid beaches, the sea is clean and various amenities (restaurants, museums, parks) are located in the area. In nearby Pegli, in addition to the beach, the Durazzo Pallavicini Park is worth a visit, with a 2.5 km path that crosses almost 9 hectares of land and takes you back in time, between neoclassical avenues and 19th century scenery along with the Ligurian Archaeology Museum. Boats depart from the Porto Antico for whale watching. And don't forget the real Genoese focaccia and farinata, just two of the many specialties of Ligurian cuisine.

Nice city but nothing to compare with Florence or Bologna.
Nice city but nothing to compare with Florence or Bologna. Felt a bit strange and unsafe in some places. Good for a one-night stay to walk around the center but would not consider staying more.
If you arrive by car beware also about the city’s truly complex ZTLs (too many) and try to stay away from the center - Novotel is the ideal location right at the end of the highway and outside the ZTLs. You can leave the car in Novotel’s parking and use the bus (line 1) for visiting the center.

a multi-faceted city : the port, the old city & the "new" city. The atmosphere changes completely from one to the others.
The aquarium is a must as well as the thick hot chocolate in the cafés.
Another must : the visit of the Palazzo Rosso

Nice city.
Nice city. We spent about half a day here as we were here to embark/disembark on a cruise. The marine area is nice, we saw lots of people queuing for the aquarium which is highly rate, although we didn't visit it.
The streets that lead into the 'old town' are really reminiscent of a medina in Morocco - think maze-like setup with very high buildings, and businesses mixed in with homes. So treat walking through them like an adventure. We passed the famous Focaccia bakery which had a very long line! And had the best pesto pasta in a cafe outside of the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, for our lunch.
After that, we didn't spend too much more time in the area as we had a Portofino boat tour booked for the afternoon / early evening. Portofino is very pricey but views are instagram-genic so it's a popular tourist spot. Overall I would visit again for a long weekend as it's a very charming city, and for the pesto.

Lovely city, easy to get around.
Lovely city, easy to get around. The foreshore areas are lovely and the cafes and restaurants are great. Pasta Street is a good restaurant nearby. A close pharmacy and small grocer. Funicular to Righi a must. An historical city of great interest. We are older and found it really easy to get around on foot and by bus.

I love Genoa, but it would not be for everybody.
I love Genoa, but it would not be for everybody. If you require lots and lots of monuments, it's probably not for you. I like it because it is close to the sea, has enough interesting things to do, has wonderful food and is a very good value. Also, the people are wonderful and the crowds are much thinner here. But, if you don't speak any Italian or if this is your first trip to Italy, you may not feel the same way. I have been to Italy many times and speak passable Italian. Also, I understand how the system works over there. This might be a challenge for a first-timer.
