Hotel Britannia, hotel in Genoa

Set in Genoa historic center, Hotel Britannia is just a few steps away from Genoa Piazza Principe Train Station and from the cruise ships terminal.

It's a backing hotel which is fine but it cost more than most 3* hotels that we have visited recently. Possibly because we had to book last minute when our ferry was cancelled. . All would be fine if it cost half as much.

FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

    Messy and lack of planning.

Messy and lack of planning. The port area could be attractive but was cluttered with cheap stalls and lacked seating and plants. Expected an attractive city but was disappointed. We were there on a Sunday and Monday so nearly all the museums were closed. The funiculars were good for views of the city.

Genova is an interesting historic city but it is dirty and crowded with cars. Personal security is a concern in lanes and alleys after 8:30pm. The city heads have a great opportunity to make something special by the port if they clean it up, remove the graffiti and demolish the raised roadway which is a scar right across the front of some beautiful buildings (poor planning in the 60’s). Get rid of the cars, get light rail and it could be as good as any city in Italy.

Interesting city full of narrow alleyways and history.

Interesting city full of narrow alleyways and history. Busy port area with large cruise ships and many gin palace yatchs. Lots of great places to eat, but can be expensive in the tourist areas. Located in a valley, so all routes are uphill from the port. Worth a trip up on the funicular railway for the panoramic view from the top.

The location of Cosy Prione is excellent - within easy walking distance of both the old and new town and the port, with several great places to eat and drink nearby. The host is very responsive, polite and helpful and the property is extremely clean and very spacious (far more spacious than expected). The air conditioning is also great. It was very powerful and kept us cool even in 33 degree celsius heat - making the apartment a blissful place to return after a day exploring Genoa in the heart of summer in Italy.

The most beautiful place I have ever lived in Italy. New, fresh flat with all facilities. Out of Genoa, but in 20 minutes from the center. It's a really quiet place, when you can relax, sleep well, with a good view on mountains and river. Cafe and restaurants around with lowest prices and smile people.
