The best thing to say about Tulcea is that it is the place to stay if you want to have a boat excursion in the Danube delta. There is nothing else of significant interest. The restaurants are ok but we struggled to find a coffee shop with a terrace. They are mostly take aways.

The main gateway to Danube delta is a small city with a pregnant post-communist look, bland and chaotic architecture. And the aggressive corruption of the administration did little to help.
However I'm glad I went and I encourage anyone to do so because Tulcea still has things to offer. The city itself can be rounded in a day and the main places to go are Casa Avramide, one of the few period building left, beautifully restored and containing a nice art collection, notably EUGENIU BARĂU's paintings-complex and full of humor. Still on the art side the Art Museum offers a good selection of romanian artists. Then the Aquarium is a perfect place for grownups and kids. Those are very close togheter.
For an epic panorama of the city and the river Monumentul Eroilor is 15 minutes walk from the center and I recommend the sunset. Going back down the hill you can continue on the waterfront promenade and at the end, by the trainstation you can circle Lacul Ciuperca (Mushroom Lake). At one of the city exits there is a fishermen village I did not visit and for 2025 a big aqua park will open.
But the main attraction is the surrounding area that you can visit in day trips if you set camp in the city or around. Delta is a universe in itself and you have many options from a few hours boat trips to overnight stays or even longer for fishing, water sports etc. If you like hiking or endurance biking Macin Mountains nature reserve are just 40 minutes by car. On the south east the lakes and the ancient fortress of Enisala, Hystria or Argamum can make another day trip.
If you reached this point you desrve to try the great fish food of the area. There are surely a lot of places to eat but I suggest caution and asking your local host for recommendations. "Storceag" is a delicious sturgeon broth (borsch) I tried for the first time and I crave now.
Around the mountains there are a few notorious vineyards to check too but I'm not an expert.

Favorite places: Danube Delta museum, Ivan Patinkin esplanade, one day trip to Danube Delta
There are several restaurants (mainly sea food and fishes) around but we preferred self catering.
Yes, it is easy to get around Tulcea by boat or by car.
To be avoided: week end and legal holidays.
A good place to spend a night. The place is a few km further from the city but if you are with a car, it is not a problem. easy check in, friendly host. The room was ok. There is shared kitchen (separate building in the yard) with basic stuff to make your own food. there is a yard where you can sit and relax and eat outside, have a coffee. A lot of flowers in the house, spacious green yard with lots of flowers. Shared spacious dining area.
The Delta 3 is a decent hotel in a city that has, unfortunately, seen better days. Things worked well enough- and the room was comfortable enough, though a bit dated. The location was super convenient. It was only a short walk to start off into the delta with the Pelicanu express boat. The breakfast was fine- and you can have it on the balcony overlooking the Danube. Definitely good value for money.
Good atmosphere and location. Went there to take boat trip to delta, which they also organise and it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommended. Location is away from central hustle, next to panoramic view hill, but still around 15 minutes walk to. Enter, promenade and restaurants. They also offer breakfast, which is simple but delicious. Overall good value for money
The flat is located in the city centre, close by walking distance of everything, including Danube' cliff & port.
It was spot clean, equipped with everything you needed for a short stay.
There is free parking available close to the building entrance.
Ionut was super friendly and gave us useful info about things to do and see around.
