Nice and in my opinion romantic wooden houses under the Arazú volcano (about 30 minutes drive to the top). We had a simple but sufficient breakfast there. Everything as presented. Houses have beautiful overview down to the valley and a Cartago city, expecially in the night. Communication with the receptionist was a bit complicated because of language barrier, but with the aid of Google we managed it, and she help us a lot with the volcano NP entry reservation.

Iyok Ami (Madre Tierra), hotel in Cartago

Iyok Ami (Madre Tierra) is situated in Cartago, 43 km from Manuel Antonio and 42 km from San José.

The person who was in charge during our stay was very kind and helpful. The place is far away from city, restaurants, markets and things like that, so plates for dinner or breakfast are not varied, but food was very good, They cultivate their own organic vegetables and trout is cultured nearby by neighboring local trout producers. The place is a very cozy little country house, we like to be in cold places, but inside the atmosphere was very comfortable. Birds you can see through the wide windows early in the morning while you are having a delicious coffee with your breakfast are a priceless gift of nature.

The staff was fabulous! The grounds were immaculate.

The staff was fabulous! The grounds were immaculate. Saw some birds in common area. Food delivered to room was pretty good. Hot. What killed us was the room was freezing with no heat or space heater or extra blanket. There was a large very cold bathroom with absolutely no hot water. Wires sticking out of the shower head. No counter or table to place toiletries. Very dark and dank. A small outdoor light fixture with probably 40 watt bulb was way above the tiny sink. No other lighting. No window light. And nowhere comfortable to sit with room. Slat wood bench on front porch and in room. But this location was at better pricing value than a few others we stayed at. Overall, if there had been heat and some warm water I would have doubled my opinion.

Visit Irazú then head to a hike in Prusia and on to Turrialba, stay at the Turrialtico for an incredible view and value (and Posole and jalapeño steak,) then book a raft trip with Econaturales on the Pacuare River, ask for Michael and Eduardo as your guides, they keep you in the raft and out of the river, you’ll be happy and tired so stay another night to eat, drink, and recover- our mistake was hopping in the car and getting back on the road after 27km on the Pacuare, a perfect day!

Don't miss out on the Basilica which is the most important church of Costa Rica. It's fun to see the train make its way slowly through the town. The main reason for visiting Cartago is of course the Irazu Volcano; it's quite easy to hop on the public bus to get there.

We actually did not get to stay at this hotel due to a waterline breakage. What makes my review so high is that they called to inform me of this issue, when I couldn't understand the staff member who was speaking Spanish in a Spanish speaking country, they called a second time with a staff member who could communicate with me in my native English and informed me as to what the issue was. The woman was very helpful, supplied me with alternate lodging and even offered to make the arrangements for me. Phenomenal!

Unfortunately, my stay in Cartago was very short as I just needed to stay one night. However, it was worth it. I loved the place and the people. The breakfast was amazing; I felt like home, having it at a family table, surrounded by beautiful people and amazing conversations. I would definitely recommend it and will stay here again, if the future brings me back to Cartago. Thank you so much to Damaris (what a lovely human being!). Wish you all the best. Saludos y la espero en Portugal ;) un abrazo a Vero también.

This very basic place but situated in exceptional place. If you are looking for hotel in this area you are also interested in quetzales, and here you can see them just from restaurant zone or from balcony. It's cloud forest on the altitude around 2700, so it's pretty cold and hotel is without heating, but they provide a lot of blankets, so it's ok. This place also give you access to well maintained trails in cloud forest, so need to go to National Park ;)

This is a great place. Excellent value. Very calm nice ambience. The garden is very nice to enjoy and relax. Breakfast is wonderful and a great price (and so is the laundry). The staff are super. A good option is to stay here and use it as a base camp for Cartago, but also the area around which has many nice things to do and see. Super comfortable.
