Meitoya So, hotel in Zaō Onsen

Renovated in 2017, Meitoya Sou offers a modern-style ryokan with natural hot spring baths. Free WiFi is offered and free private parking is available on site.

I recently stayed at the Meitoya So Hotel in Zao Onsen, Yamagata, and had a highly disappointing experience. The corridors and rooms had a distinct milky scent, and the futon beds were extremely thin and uncomfortable unless stacked together. Unfortunately, there was a significant language barrier, and the staff failed to provide us with sheets, leaving us to sleep on what felt like dirty mats. Our early arrival was met with rudeness from an older gentleman at the front desk, a stark contrast to the usual politeness of Japanese hospitality. He refused us early check-in and even denied us the use of the restroom, despite the hotel being empty at the time. This rudeness continued during check-in, where he remained unfriendly, unlike the other staff members who were more welcoming. The room's air conditioning was outdated, resulting in poor air quality and an uncomfortable night's sleep due to excessive sweating. Additionally, the room was generally very dirty. The onsen, a primary reason for our stay, was dirty and unusable, which was extremely disappointing. Breakfast was overcharged and not included, adding to the overall dissatisfaction. Overall, I do not recommend staying at this hotel. It is not worth the high price, and the experience was far below expectations. Save your money and find a better place to stay. My sincere review to fellow travelers!!!

I absolutely loved this place! Everything was great, the traditional japanese room, amenities, onsens, food... And the people! They were incredible, it was like having a new family! I am extremely grateful to all of them for taking such good care of me, the foreigner. They made my stay wonderful and memorable.

A nice ryokan with a nice onsen. Very hospitable staff. The free milk/coffee/pudding service at the lounge is a nice touch, especially the fresh milk is very creamy and delicious. They served the famous Zao beef for dinner which was delicious. The room is huge and comfortable with all the amenities

Hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable with an extra futon, recommended vegetarian places, and showed us the onsen and where to rent equipment. It has a communal vibe, so extroverted people would love it.

Everything is really nice, it is an old style ryokan and very good hot spring. Room is spacious with view. Was able to use the washing machine for free! Located on the main hot spring street , walkable to the Ropeway. Lots of restaurants nearby however some required advance booking. The hosts are very lovely and nice. If you want to experience authentic ryokan this will be the place to go

We loved our stay at Matsuo House. Taka, Oraphin and Yuuchan were amazing hosts. They were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The rooms are traditiinL tatami rooms, futon beds. The lodge is right beside one of the public onsens and close to the chairlifts. Highlight of our ski trip to Japan. We will be back. Especially loved our morning greetings from 3 yo Yuuchan - "sleep well?" We sure did. Xx

It's a very cosy, traditional place. We get to sleep on a futon in a tatami room. It is clean, the scenery from the rooms in the morning is amazing. Inou-san is more than willing to drive us around the place. The breakfast toast with cheese is delicious.

Yoshidaya Ryokan is a beautifully presented traditional ryokan. Its right in the middle of the old part of Zao Onsen surrounded by historic buildings. This is a traditional Ryokan so be prepared to walk up stairs and use shared facilities. The rooms are very warm and comfortable and the Ryokan facilities are well presented and clean. The Hot Spring bath was wonderful! I will be staying at Yoshidaya again!
