This hotel has just 14 massive and expansive rooms - frankly more like an apartment on two levels.
The setting is peaceful and the staff just ever presently helpful without being intrusive.
The Assistant General Manager, Amila, helped enormously with advice and translation as most of the staff speak only Japanese.
The public spa was in fact restricted to hotel guests so not really very public. Exceptionally well set up.
Dinner in room was great and the Japanese breakfast was super comprehensive - served in my downstairs dining area by my room attendant.

We (couple and an 8 month old baby) stayed for 3 nights in November and everything was great. The staff were amazing. Sho-In and the rest of the team treated us like family and were so attentive. The food was phenomenal with a different kaiseki meal every night and morning. The onsen were adequately hot and beautiful, also with a cold plunge pool and sauna. Gardens out the front of the dining area were also beautiful. The room (we stayed on level 3) was great, comfortable beds, beautiful lookout to see the autumn colours. Parking available for a small fee of 500 yen per night. We cant wait to come back!
At Unzen Fukudaya, guests can enjoy public indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and relaxing massages. Free wired internet is provided in all rooms, while the lobby provides free Wi-Fi.

Public onsen in addition to private one in room.
Attentive staff and fulfilled dietary needs of guests. 大山-san who looked after us during dinner was humorous, friendly and gave us a wonderful dinning experience.
Experience culture authentically with a stay at this traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Sleep on the floor (on a futon roll) in a room furnished with tatami flooring and sliding doors. Guests can often expect access to a communal bath plus a complimentary Japanese garment called a yukata.

Perfect location to explore Unzen/Shimabara. The owner and staffs are extremely friendly and helpful, told us their favourite onsen spots/restaurants/activities etc. We enjoyed chatting a lot :)
Our Japanese Tatami room was spacious and spotless clean. Nice view from the window!
We would definitely come back again.
Extremely clean. Old style hotel. Great room and very good size with towels and yukata if you need. Hot tea and water provided. We enjoyed the breakfast. Japanese style but not too overwhelming. Close to unzen centre ad there are restaurants for evening food there and plenty onsens
Room was spacious and comfortable, with own private onsen. They offered different patterned yukata for us to choose! We ordered dinner and breakfast and they offered the best meals we had to-date fr hotel/ ryokan. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. Free coffee / tea at lobby were a bonus.
Very good, affordable option in Unzen. The facilities are very clean, the room is traditional with futon and yukata, and the bath is nice. The pension does not have outdoor bath but there are many public baths just a few minutes away. The host is a very welcoming old lady, she prepares nice typical Japanese breakfast. Thank you! 😊🙏
Excellent modern ryokan with very hospitable staff and amazing fresh and high quality food. We were served by the owner and his wife who were humble and friendly people.
A family of 4, we stayed 2 nights in a room with private onsen. The room was modern, clean and the fact that we had a private onsen to ourselves was a winner. Highly recommend this hotel.
We loved the kaiseki dinner and beautiful breakfast served here as part of the ryokan experience. The onsen here have a number of options both indoor and outdoor. Staff were helpful although not much English was spoken.
the Obama bus terminal is just 3mins walk away, and the ryokan is right next to the sea, you can see sunset just stepping out or enjoy it in your room.
the rooms are also very clean. and the room we booked was with a private spring within the room, it was perfect! hot spring, sunset and the ocean.
This is a cozy hotel with traditional rooms and a small onsen. The owners are incredibly helpful and very sweet. The location is convenient and within walking distance to the town and they provide parking if you inform them in advance. The rooms here are really special - they are huge tatami rooms with comfortable futons. The rooms have recently been renovated so that they keep their traditional feeling but are not dusty or dated. Every thing is very clean.
Limited English spoken by staff, but they make a little go a long way and deserve huge credit for their patience and effort in handling non-Japanese speakers during a busy holiday period. Breakfast and dinner are both good, as are the onsens, and location is central to the hot springs, bus stops to/from Shimabara and Nagasaki, and an easy walk up the hill behind town, which affords panoramic views.
