Really great place to stay, well worth the money and full of lovely touches like the video games, barley tea, coffee milk etc. The private baths are excellent as well, and the staff were really nice and kind as well.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay at Kusatsu Onsen, look no further than Kusatsu Hotel Bekkan Wata no Yu. My family and I recently stayed here for three nights and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is run by Miki and her husband who are both lovely. I spoke mostly with Miki but from the first, she was so kind and responsive to any questions we had. To get there, we took the express bus (pay at the end of the ride and you can pay by credit card) from Karuizawa Station which drops you off at the Lawson Kusatsu Bus Terminal (1.5 hour ride) and from the bus terminal it is about a 15 minute walk to the hotel. Although the town is pretty small and everything is fairly close, the hotel is conveniently located a short six minute walk from the main square where the yubatake is located (all of those pictures you see online of the big hot spring when you look up Kusatsu Onsen). On the way to the yubatake, you walk through Sainokawara Street which is where a lot of the shopping and restaurants are concentrated. Each room at this hotel has its own toilet and sink but bathing is done in the hotel’s public onsen (separate men and women’s facilities) on the first floor. Since the bathing facilities are shared, we did have overlap with other hotel guests when using the hotel onsen. For an additional charge you can order breakfast and/or dinner but be sure to order ahead of time to make sure they can accommodate your request. Miki’s husband is the chef and we tried breakfast and dinner and they were both delicious and definitely a must try experience. Traveling tip: a lot of the restaurants are closed on Wednesdays so if your stay includes a Wednesday, that’s a great day to schedule your meals at the hotel. We didn’t want to deal with the bus on the day we were leaving so we took a taxi back to Karuizawa Station which Miki helped us book the day before.

Everything was amazing! The size of the room, the private onsen, the breakfast, it was all so good and above expectations. The room is quite large, has the small living room space and two beds which is more than enough for me and my mom. The onsen downstairs is private and just what we needed to relax and unwind, they provide yukata to change into. The traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing! Everything was fresh, the variety was amazing and it was all so delicious. The location of the hotel is about a 15 minute walk from town center so it's not bad but just something to keep in mind if you want something a little closer to town center. There is a 7 eleven across the street if you need. By far a highlight of our kusatsu trip!

Extremely cozy and well located within the small onsen city of Kusatsu, only steps away from all the central activities such as Yubatake and all the tourist shops. Very clean facilities, 24/7 private baths for guests to use, that all have fresh hot spring water flowing into them. The staff are kind, and the breakfast is thoughtful and well prepared. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and hope to visit again with family/friends. Some staff may not have the best English but they all made an excellent effort to communicate with me which I appreciated. 24/7 tea and coffee availability was also a big plus, especially after a long dip in the hot springs!
Built in 1913, the Kusatsu Hotel exhibits the architectural style of the Japanese Taisho Era.

This place cost each yen you pay. Its just so perfect for a semi-tradicional experience in Japan. I say semi, because they manage to take the best of the japanese tradition ryokan (onsen, pyjama, beds, tatami…) and they modernize it. The people are so nice! All the rest is as perfect!

Fantastic location! Right in the center of town overlooking the hot spring water feature. There’s even a lounge on the second floor where you can overlook it. The indoor and outdoor onsens were excellent. Hotel staff were extremely attentive. Facilities were well kept. Did not dine at the hotel so I cannot say how the food was.

Very nice and helpful staff. Can buy breakfast, gave me towels and yukata without added pricing.
Location was right off the central onsen/square of Kusatsu. Very convenient, calm and quiet. The ryokan itself had 2 private and 2 gendered onsens that were almost always available for our own use and I will absolutely stay here again if I visit Kusatsu again.
Me and my friends stayed at this lovely ryokan for one night. We enjoyed our spacious room and the private and public Onsen hot springs of the hotel. The hotel is located in a nice central spot which is great for exploring Kusatsu Onsen. The food and services were good.
I really loved the whole experience at Ryokan Tamura. I felt very relaxed and pampered since dinner and breakfast was served, and we loved using the onsen. We asked for vegan food, and they informed us that the broth may contain dashi, but for us that was ok. The food was delicious and we got to try some of the traditional Japanese cuisine consisting of mainly vegetables. There were men only and women only onsens, and two private onsens. The water was super warm and relaxing. The staff was also very welcoming and nice and spoke english.
It was a beautiful stay and our first experience at a ryokan. We were made to feel very special from the moment we arrived, until the time we checked out. The meals were lovely. Lots of interesting things to try for both dinner and breakfast and dressed in the provided yukatas. We loooooved our private onsen in our room and also tried two of the three private onsens on site which can be used by any guest pending availability. Beautiful views! The town is also lovely but be prepared for the sulfur smell from the hot springs!
Western style room was great! The tatami room had ample room for several futons, in addition to a couple beds outside the tatami room. Open concept with sliding doors was great for our group (6 people) so we can chat and hangout freely, and slide the doors shut at night for privacy. Breakfast was good. The outdoor onsen was really nice.
The Onsen was gorgeous, clean and well organised with an efficient and easy to understand system.
The staff was exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful, and spoke English very very well.
The rooms were beautiful and super warm (even while there in the snow you did not have to worry about rugging up). I loved the classic wooden ryokan set-up and tatami floors with futons. Futons were also made for you each night while you were out, and packed up for you after you left in the morning.
Kusatsu is a beautiful town, built around a hot spring. The hotel (ryokan) was located 2 blocks from the central area - well within easy walking distance. It was a perfect town and hotel for a 24-hour visit. Lots of stores and artisanal food in town. At the hotel, we enjoyed the public onsen as well as an hour in a private room. The kaiseki (multi-course) dinner was excellent as was the breakfast.
Liked the tatami style of the place! Looks newly refurbished and very clean. Facilities are complete but bear in mind there is no shower/bath facilities. We went for the Ohtaki No Yu Onsen and showered there, so this was not an isssue. Toilets are shared but this is not an issue too as there weren't many ppl staying at the ryokan. Parking is walkable, only 50metres away. Very value for money!!
The location was lovely, the grounds were beautiful, and the staff was bilingual and very friendly, and the private onsen was extremely nice. The futons were quite comfortable and I loved having baskets and yukatas available to take around town.
