Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa, hotel in Gaya Island

Located off the coast of Borneo on Gaya Island, Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa features spacious villas with a private balcony. The resort boasts an outdoor pool and 3 dining options.

The resort is accessed by boat and is completely secluded. From the sea, the resort is virtually invisible, as it has been carefully designed to melt into the rainforest background. The individual rooms are beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable. The beach is clean, despite the constant barrage of plastic pollution from the sea. The main reef is fairly bland but seemed reasonably healthy, with a good variety of sealife. It is closed at low tides for the safety of guests and preservation of the reef environment, so be sure to check with the staff. There is a smaller reef on the other side of the bay that can still be accessed at low tide. It's not as impressive, but we actually saw a lot of interesting fish there. Top tip, If you can drag yourself out bed at around 6am, there is a good chance of seeing small reef sharks in the shallow waters around the pier. It's also worth a walk down the pier at night for a chance to spot interesting sealife. The pool area seemed popular with guests and there always seemed to be a few sun beds free. The food was great and the service was friendly and efficient. In fact, the staff in general were wonderful and made us feel very welcome and special. They are an absolute credit to the establishment! The only slight issue we had was that our family villa was way up a long, steep hill. Lifts are available, on request, in little golf buggies but it wasn't easy to just pop back on foot whenever we wanted, particularly in the heat of the day. However, we had complete privacy and our balcony looked out onto stunning rainforest, so we were very happy. All in all, we absolutely loved this resort and wish we could have stayed longer. It's not a cheap option but it's definitely worth it. Complete luxury, I highly recommend it!

Gaya Island Resort - Small Luxury Hotels of the World, hotel in Gaya Island

Set within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park off the coast of Borneo, Gaya Island offers elegant villas with panoramic views of the South China Sea and the rainforest.

A unique location with rooms surrounded by greenery and a nice beach available, although the sea isn't very appealing due to the pollution (lots of plastic). To reach the rooms, it may be necessary to walk a long distance uphill, so I wouldn't recommend it for those who are not very active or elderly.

The scenery was beautiful and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. There was an unforeseen issue with our room which they were very good about. The two restaurants were wonderful - the teppanyaki evening was superb and highly recommend. The snorkelling was decent and the kayaking was fun although you can just use the same equipment around the resort without cost.

The views from our villa of the sea and beach were outstanding. The room had been set up beautifully for our 25th wedding anniversary. Lovely pool which was cleaned daily. Staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Wildlife was present around the resort - monkeys snd monitor lizards.

Amazing stay at a paradise resort. The only down side was the mosquitoes in the room at night having a feast on you. Please add mosquito net to the beds.

You really pay for the location. Everything else is way overpriced for what you get. The pool is very nice, even being in the sun until 3PM. Beautiful coral reef just in front of the resort where you can snorkel for free and the jungle is right behind the resort where you can spot several wildlife

Wonderful staycation, food and rooms! Truly relaxing and bliss. Shoutout to the resort for doing a lot to preserve and refurbish the environment, corals and beaches around the island! The hotel staff were also super accomodating of us being vegetarians and made effort to add extra options to the buffet breakfast which was a very kind gesture!
