Tanna Island is one of those 'must see' places. It is in such an undeveloped state with terrible roads made worse by a very wet, wet season and you have to rely on the skill of the local drivers to go anywhere. But the scenery is awesome, particularly when you get up close and personal with the volcano, and the people are so friendly and welcoming.
We've been to many places in the world, but Tanna would rate amongst the most memorable. It's natural and unspoiled which is rare in a world that's ruled by technology and development. But we found that one of the best things about the island was not the stunning jungle scenery, not the awesome sights and sounds of Mt Yasur coughing and belching its load into the atmosphere day and night, not the icy waterfalls, not the steaming hot springs, not the unique forms of accommodation on offer... No, the best thing about Tanna was the friendliness of the ni Vanuatu people, who took every opportunity to say hello and introduce themselves, or to wave at us, or to throw us a passing smile or help us out when we got stuck... Magic!
1. stay at Alofa 2 - 3 nights 2. Visit Volcano 3. Visit blue cave 4. Check you flights are on time /not cancelled AIR VANUATU no help at the Tanna airport they cancelled our flight ( apparently this happens often) and could give us no information about when we could leave Tanna so we had to charter a plane cost Aust $1800 ouch.
Regardless what any travel website tells you, you cannot hire your own vehicle and drive around. You must hire a transport truck and driver. There are no car seats for children and usually no seat belts either. Often you will share the transport with many others and you will sit in the open back of the truck - rain, wind or blazing sun. But anywhere that truck takes you on Tanna is worth seeing. The Volcano is absolutely the best, but there are so many other places to visit as well.....Port Resolution, local villages, fishing places, snorkeling spots, caves. I would not take young children under 8 years to Tanna.
Expensive but the island remains still untouched and is worth the money to go and see things that very few tourists have seen yet. You can go around the world to sites like to Machu Picchu and fight the thousands of other tourists trying to take a picture, or you can go to tanna, where you don’t need to worry about fighting for your position to see some natural wonders. And you can get your own little spot to gaze into yasur and watch the lava show with only a handful of other tourists! Bliss!
The volcano is the main attraction but for a gift by nature the prices are outrageous. 100 US$ first visit (you may see very little if the weather is bad) 65 for the second. The third one is free but you need to stay longer on the island obviously. For this you get a short dance show (only in the afternoon sessions), a small bottle of water, a leaking raincoat and a 10 minute ride up the mountain. Another 100$ roundtrip may be required to get two persons from the airport/west coast to your accommodation/the entrance. We learned the price increases are a recent thing and it looks like they are building a fancy entrance with the extra income. We could not care less and just want to see the vulcano. Make a decent calculation of your costs before heading for Tanna!
The main reason why we went to Tanna was to see Mount Yasur, which was absolutely AMAZING, however there were lots of other awesome things to do, like the blue cave, turtle spotting, snorkeling and relaxing at Whitegrass Resort. The staff at Whitegrass Resort assisted with arranging our tours, and the restaurant was extremely good too.
Definitely recommend! We stayed for two nights on Tanna Island which was perfect for us. The resort was great, we saw the best coral I’ve ever seen right out the front of the resort. You can also walk 1km down the road to the Blue Holes. We went to Blue Hole 2 which is worth going to, you just have to go at low tide and walk over rocks to get there. Also highly recommend Mt Yasur, it’s an absolute must if you go to Tanna!
The main reason to visit tanna is for the volcanoe which is fabulous. The rumbling, the explosions and sheer spectacle at the crater rim are truly a great experience.as it gets dark the explosions of lava into air are a sight .the people are lovely and friendly and the landscape is beautiful.
Mt Yasur was incredible, & my stay at Volcano Eco Treehouse was spectacular! Lovely hosts, & truly amazing sleeping so high up the tree, seeing the glow of the volcano-a MUST to stay there. Brave taxi driver got us there despite VERY wet muddy road-so glad! Alofa Beach Bungalows superb, see separate review. Tanna has a different feel to the other islands, maybe my very favourite part of this wonderful country. SO easy to travel here, busses or taxis always available, drivers all speak good English & are so helpful.

Perfect hotel to base yourself from for Tanna exploring
I love the scenery and natural environment. Love the snorkeling and pool. And finding little spots around to sit and meditate. Getting away from the fast life and just sitting back to enjoy nature's peace
