I've lost count of how many times I've visited Colonia. The Cuidad Vieja is a UNESCO heritage site but there's a lot more to it than that. Follow the rambla up to the Real San Carlos and beyond for some fabulous beaches and woods.
Being a European, Colonia is so overrated. Any other village in Spain or Italy can beat it. I'm not saying it is not interesting, but don't get excited, it is really nothing special. The historical context is very interesting.
We enjoyed the old town where we walked and dropped in to some small establishments. We ate at Charco twice, for lunch, And the meals were delicious. We really loved the cafe Querienhote. We stopped one evening simply because we wanted to sit down and see the sunset and it has a beautiful view of it. But, we ended up eating dinner there because the menu sounded so delicious! And everything we ordered was fabulous! We went there again the next evening--same thing. Delicious dinner with a fabulous sunset. The owner Maggie was there and she obviously cared so much about her cafe and the people she cooked for, and our server Adriana was just delightful. We went there every night we were in Colonia. And we wish we had stayed longer.
I loved the old part of Town, the uneven streets and tranquil sunsets on the river. Great views. We walked everywhere, except from and to the ferry terminal. There are varied and diverse choices for lunch and dining, ranging from classic "chivito" sandwich to cuisine at a couple of specially recommended spots. We saw the sights and mostly rested and took advantage of the easy paced life Colonia offers to visitors and locals alike.
Walk the old town and lighthouse area. Lovely old area with plenty of charm. Lots off nice cafes with descent food. SeaCat ferry was very expensive ride at us 75 per person. Colonia express is about us 21 per person.
Colonia del Sacramento is a beautiful little town. It's a lovely place to visit for the day and night. We had a wonderful meal at the Charco Bistro in the evening, highly recommended for food lovers. We enjoyed walking around the small cobbled little streets and along the coast line out of the town. It's a lovely little trip to escape to from the busy city life of Buenos Aires.
A perfect getaway! Some restaurants can be pricey for average food. I recommend the restaurant at the port, on the dock. Loved the candombe on the street. Taxi drivers are super friendly, like most people from Colonia. Get lost wandering around the old town!
Colonia was charming. It is a nice place to relax and wander the streets. Shopping and food is also good. Taking the ferry to BA was really easy and straightforward. We really liked spending a sunny afternoon having pasta and wine a La Bohemia.
Quaint town with historic colonial section, cobblestone streets, river walks and rambla, many excellent restaurants, and mature trees that offer shade and tranquility. Currently it is best to pay with foreign credit card on all food and purchases, as government automatically removes 22% tax before signing. This policy applies to car rentals made within Uruguay, but not to hotels. Thus pay with cash and you pay the full posted price. This policy was put in place to encourage tourism. It may change so check before you travel.
Look for a hotel located close or in the old city, because everything in Colonia happens in this neighborhood so you can just walk around, not needing a car to move. One day and one night is enough to visit Colonia, but less than it you will not have enough time to see it all and well.
Pleasant, clean, and quiet. Friendly staff and the hotel is close to both the ferry and bus terminals, and to the old town. The room wasn't large but fine for one person The bathroom was nice with good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was a simple continental fare. I would stay at this hotel again. Most people come to Colonia on a day trip from Buenos Aires, but it is worth staying the night as it is much quieter, you take in the sunset and there are a number of really pleasant restaurants a bar. I
Colonia del Sacramento
Well positioned hotel with a small number of rooms arranged around a courtyard. Lovely room with a huge bed and great shower. Breakfast was lovely (although it was a bit slow for items to be replenished). Close to restaurants and shops and we took the recommendation to book dinner at the sister restaurant, Charco, which did not disappoint. We were only in Colonia for one night but hope to return and would definitely book to stay here again.
Colonia del Sacramento
The whole experience was exceptional. Emiliano contacted me at the right time with very clear entry information, plus other helpful info for my stay. The apartment was marvellous - roomy, clean, very well appointed, and with an incredible outlook. The whole property and operation have been thoughtfully put together. The location is great, one of the best in Colonia. All contact with the host was very helpful but never intrusive.
Colonia del Sacramento
The apartment was located at the lower level, very easy to access, super clean, practical, and with all the amenities needed to spend a few days in Colonia. Sunrises at the little patio are very enjoyable, quiet and full of songbirds. There are stores and nice places to walk nearby, and by car 10 minutes away from anywhere. Quiet, enjoyable, practical, welll designed and well thought out. Will definitely go back.
The location was top for us as we came by bus and left with Colonia Express ferry. Patricia from the reception was really kind and helpful. We could let the luggage in the hotel after the check out till the afternoon. We had lunch at a small restaurant near the hotel, Florida, which does not look very fancy, however the quality was astonishing. We enjoyed the short stay in Colonia.
Colonia del Sacramento
Such a lovely hotel,i’m very pleased to have stayed here for my one night in lovely Colonia.l had to leave very early the next morning and the hotel provided me with the most delightfully packaged lunch. Sandwiches, pastries, and little scones and biscuits all individually wrapped and sealed with ribbons. Very professional
Colonia del Sacramento
The hotel was really near the bus station 2minutes walk also only 5minutes from ferry station and ten minutes walk into Colonia it was clean comfortable breakfast was basic but fresh and adequate the staff were friendly and helpful especially Emanwel who spoke good English a good nights stay Maria and Shaun England
A little gem a place in a magical town. Staff was friendly and helpful. The back garden and facilities are a little oasis. Tastefully decorated and unpretentious. Made our Colonia stay very comfortable. My one nit was the WiFi. I was finishing up some business and needed corporate access to my company.
Colonia del Sacramento
Very nice, clean and private apartment right across the street from the river walk and beaches. Beautiful walk into the city, historic district, and bus and ferry terminals. I really enjoyed my stay here and would stay here again. Colonia del Sacramento was a great place to visit.
Colonia del Sacramento
The hotel is in the middle of the old city. It is an old building and has its character, nothing new and shiny about it - but it is clean, the staff is nice and helpful, and it worked as it should. The perfect place to stay if you go and visit the old city of Colonia.
It's a decent basic hotel in a privileged location in Colonia, everything is walkable, the barrio Historico and the bus/boat terminal. there is also a small swimming pool and sea view room. The beds are comfortable and it is a good value for money in Colonia.
Large property with lots of things to do - lovely outdoor pool, lake for boating and paddle boards, putting, driving range, bikes etc. Slightly out of town so you need a car or taxi to go to Colonia to visit or for dinner. Bed in the room was super comfortable
Restaurant was excellent for breakfast (included) and for dinner. Very small hotel, nice proprietor and staff. Quiet location on the outskirts of Colonia del Sacramento, 5-10 minutes drive into historic city center. Beautiful grounds with organic garden.
Small friendly hotel in Colonia. Rooms varied - those on the ground floor were disturbed by pipe noise but those on the upper floors had comfy airy rooms. Good breakfast. Colonia is lovely and easy to wander round. This hotel is a good base.
Location, opposite a lovely river beach with a "parador" serving delicious fresh food. The hotel was located a 20 min walk from the old colonial centre. You can walk along the rambla and watch the sunset from the hotel.
The women that manage this hotel are amazing. They make sure that every detail is perfect! The breakfast is incredible!!!! I will always recommend this place to everyone who goes to Colonia
Lovely hotel, with comfortable and clean rooms and friendly staff. Very good bed and breakfast. Great pool area and just of the main drag in Colonia. Ask for a room overlooking the pool.
Colonia del Sacramento
Location and the antique colonial style apartments, remarkably close to the beach, you can see the ocean from apartment windows. The host was extremely helpful and accommodated our needs.
Nice little hotel perfectly located if you come by ferry or by bus. It is closed to car and bike rental as well. The owner is very nice and will give you lots of advice around Colonia.
Colonia del Sacramento
It's a well located and cozy hostel in Colonia del Sacramento. They have an outside asado area, good Wi-Fi and a nice and quiet location. I'd would definitely stay there again!
