The housekeeping staff were polite and professional. Owner was visible, vocal and vibrantly engaged in the business. Excellent value, we plan on returning on a regular basis.

We just finished our 3 day stay in Mafia and at Mafia Island Bungalows : it was a lovely stay, all-round : beautiful space for the house, comfortable terrace, perfect bedroom (Upendo - very nicely decorated with local flair, loved it), great bathroom… everything fine! The place is overall very quiet as it sits a little away from the road at the entrance of the Marine Park. We did not meet the owners, who where on a trip off the island : however, they took the time to check-in with us every single day, and it was much appreciated. We also would like to adress a great shout out to the staff : Hassan was very available, without being « too present » / just the right balance; and there is an amazing Chef on premises: we loved the breakfasts and even more the diners! The homemade bread and Chapatis, the soups, the mains and the deserts… everything was delicious ! Well done, we whole-heartedly recommend staying with you when visiting Mafia and hope to come again one day ☺️

The trip from the airport to the marine park is short, easily and comfortably done by tuktuk. The atmosphere in the marine park area is very relaxed. People were genuinly very friendly. I felt perfectly safe exploring the area as a woman traveling alone. If you want to venture outside of the marine park area, check with your lodge for advice. Some villages outside of Utende can be more conservative, so one must maybe take more into consideration the dress code for women for instance if one wish to go there. Snorkeling was great. Visit to the Kua ruins and lagoon was a nice trip. Turtle hatching trip was memorable (long walk to and from that beach though). Swimming with whale sharks is highly recommended(lots of fun!). All the lodges in the marine park are very nice, although some are more luxurious than others. All the budget options seemed very nice to me (I stayed at Big Blu, which was great). What is really nice is that even though you are staying at a budget lodge, you are more than welcome to go to one of the more luxurious ones to have dinner, lunch or drinks. Or even to use their spa. For dinner it is wise to let them know in beforehand that you wish to visit though. Inside the marine park, most of the lodges are very close to each other(walking distance). I had some really relaxing and quiet, but also eventful few days at Mafia island. Highly recommend it to others. If you are looking for a party place, you might want to go somewhere else though. Also, if you prefer easy access to white sandy beaches for kilometers, the west side of the island is better than the marine park area, which is more a mixture of shorter white beaches and mangroves. If you would just want to visit the western side for a day, I know that at least the Ras Mbisi lodge will happily let you visit and use all of their facilities for a whole day for something like 20 dollars.
Utende
Meremeta, the founder and owner, as well as his staff are exceptional. You will find big, very clean and comfortable rooms, as well as great food with local prising. Furthermore Meremeta will be making sure you discover the island and miss no possible activities (if you want, he doesn't try to persuade you, no worries). It's by far the best acommodation you're going to have at Mafia Island! We travelled through Tanzania for over a month and we never felt this welcomed and appreciated as with Meremeta.

this is like a jungle treehouse hotel-- so cool! staff was soooo nice! great social atmosphere even though i was like one of the only guests. THREE different beach entrances, AND an on-demand bar with great sunset beach views? Stunning. Food was very yummy. love that they are really trying to promote sustainability and responsible tour operators on mafia island.
It is a new hotel, but the best one that we went to in tanzania. The staff is lovely and helped us out werever they could. Would definitly go back if we are at mafia island in the future.

Butiama Marine Camp is the perfect place to stay in Utende. There are so many activities, Meals are amazing, and the Beach is very walkable and quiet. Would absolutely recommend to all. While it can be a bit pricey with Marine Park fees, it is absolutely worth the convenience and comfort.
Nice and relaxing environment. Very clean, well maintained and very helpfull staff.
