I had a pleasant surprise in the city of Toyama, Japan. By chance I wandered into the restaurant "The Symposium", in 2F 3-28 Honmachi Toyamashi , where chef Satoshi Hirono has created a particular type of cuisine: he wants to combine Italian traditions using Japanese products. He lived in Italy for 10 years, learning traditional recipes from Italian chefs, in different regions of the country. Now Satoshi has revisited these recipes using his creativity, mixing the finest Japanese ingredients with products from Italy. So, I ate exquisite dishes from his tasting menu: pumpkin cream with pistachios from Bronte, Sicily; Japanese pancakes with Italian porcini mushrooms; swordfish with zucchini and pecorino cheese; potatoes with cream cheese and bottarga; a platter with Sardinian cheeses and salami from Siena , Tuscany; pasta with gorgonzola cheese and many other delicious dishes. He has created an innovative and unique cuisine. I absolutely recommend this restaurant which deserves a lot of success! Good luck Satoshi!
WE LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT TOYAMA. THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD THE SHOPS, THE EXPRESS RAIL, THE TRAMS ARE SO EASY AND WONDERFUL TO RIDE. THE COUNTRY FEELING OF THE PLACE BUT ALSO THE CITY FEELING IS THERE TOO. THE HUGE STAR BUCKS AT THE PARK IS SO WONDERFUL. THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO AND SEE IN TOYAMA. THE RIVER CRUISE WAS GREAT. THE TRAIN STATION IS A MUST TO VISIT IN TOYAMA. IT HAS SO MANY GREAT SHOPS AND RESTURANTS THERE. THE MOST WONDERFUL THING ABOUT TOYAMA IS THE EXPRESS RAIL IT HAS TO TAKE YOU TO KUROBE, TOYAMA. A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE MUST VISIT TO SEE THE KUROBE GORGE. THE GORGE IS SO BIG AND BEAUTIFUL. MUST SEE IT ESPECIALLY IN THE FALL. THE COLORS OF THE FALL IS BREATHTAKING. THE MOUNTAINS IS SO BIG AND INCREDIBLE. THE HOT SPRINGS IS A MUST TO TRY.
Stop over at end of Alpine Route and much cheaper then hotels in Kanazawa. Used to visit Kenroku-en, very nice gardens in Kanazawa. Easy travelling between Toyama, Kanazawa and Kyoto by shinkansen.
Due to very short stay, we had made one day travel by train to the Unazukionsen which was a very special & wonderful experience for us. Thus, we didn't have much time in Toyama. But the food in Toyama were fantastic !
We caught Toyama at a great time!!! The cherry blossoms were in full bloom! Glad we came when we did because we'd miss the full bloom in Tokyo! Too bad we didn't have time for the fire fly squid at toyama bay!
Very beautiful Sakura Flowers around the ToyamaJoatoyoshi Park, particularly along the River, with a spectacular view of colorful flowers and the lighting. Check the weather before you go to Kurobe Alpine Road not to get disappointed like what I have experienced. Paying almost Yen 7000 return ticket to Murodo and end up only in the train, cable car and buses. Definitely a place to visit in Japan, and enjoy the fresh seafood. Do not miss the Takayama Spring or Autumn Festival and..... the BEST WAGYU in Japan called Hida beef.... Buy Hokuriku Arch Pass if you enjoy travell around or a full 7 days JR Pass.
I love the countryside. Took the train to Mt Tateyama, there's beautiful sceneries of the mountains and countryside along the journey. Toyama is a safe and peaceful place. I would definitely visit to Toyama again.
Tateyama is an awesome place to spend a weekend. The Snow walls and the mountains are beautiful. The place offers various trekking options. But we were unable to trek because of very bad weather. Accommodation options in Tateyama are less and can get costly during peak season. We stayed in Toyama for the night. There are some restaurants in the Alpine route, but the place can get crowded. Day passes for Alpine route can be brought from Dentetsu Toyama station. Tip: Check the weather before you plan the trip. Snow wall walk and trekking cannot be done if Rain or snow fall is there.
It really seemed like the locals in Toyama didn’t like foreigners. Most would avoid any interaction. Was a real flip from places like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Sapporo. Won’t be coming here again
Toyama being a regional city is a livable size compared to the major Japanese cities. It is easy to get around with an easy to understand and use tram network with four routes. But as it is easy to walk between most hotels, the train station, shopping areas and major attractions even though the tram was available we walked. The restaurant choices were numerous and the variety of food vast. The tuna shashimi was outstanding. The only issue with the restaurants is many still permit smoking. We found one right next door to our hotel that had good non-smoking areas and great food. We tried others but kept coming back to this one. The stand out place we visited was the Toyama Museum of Art and Design. There is not enough space to describe how interesting this Museum was. We stayed in Toyama for 5 days using it as a base to travel and see the sights in the surrounding district. There is so much to see and do we could have spent another 5 days.
Excellent choice to explore Toyama. Very close to a bus stop and city centre. Much of our sightseeing was at walkable distances. Including toyama castle, river cruise, glass museum, science museum etc. less than 20min walk from toyama railway station. Plus it has lots of freebies like free sauna / hot bath and ice lollies after and even free noodles at night. Excellent breakfast with japanese and continental items. Specialty items like the firefly squid, mentaiko omelet etc are found on the breakfast menu which was an unexpected surprise.
I was a bit eager to test this hotel since it's been recently built in 2020. It's wide and has nice street/city view from the lobby and rooms halls. In the room the desk chair and the bed were roundly comfortable, the TV screen very wide but I haven't used it. Special mention to the bathroom design, it's spacious for a Japanese hotel, the bathtub is large and deep, perfect for relaxation. I'll stay here at least one night when I come to Toyama from now on.
Room was big with beautiful mountain views! Very conveniently located close to Toyama train station and within walking distance to a nearby car rental with hotel parking available for a fee which made transport a breeze! Hotel was also accommodating and allowed external visitors to the rooms for a short while which was very helpful - many other hotels did not allow this and we had to cancel another booking due to this restriction.
We've stayed at Toyama Chitetsu several times in the past and looked forward to staying again. The free coffee and massage chairs as well as the large table for planning our trips for the day make this hotel feel like home. It is a very short walk to the JR station and many places to grab a bite to eat. The breakfast buffet is great and loaded with many Japanese items which is very much appreciated!

The house was the perfect size, super cozy, and had every amenity I needed! There were western style beds and traditional Japanese futons, the futon was so comfortable! The hosts were so welcoming and kind! They drove me to the station and back when I needed, and even cooked my breakfast! They made my trip to Toyama absolutely incredible! I will never forget it! I hope to come back again!!
We drove by car from Tokyo. Coming to Toyama was a longtime dream for me as a resident in Japan for 17 years. Everything was so smooth. Location perfect. staff very kind. High rise bedroom with decent view. Easy to pick up the car and go to the beach or mountain anytime and enjoy local evening dinner.
The moment when you walked in, everything is awesome. I took my family from Matsumoto to Toyama, and stayed in this amazing hotel. Compared to the last night we lived, Hotel Buena Vista in Matsumoto , was totally different even if you need to pay the same amount of money.
Very helpful staff. Assisted in communicating with our next hotel. Location walking distance to JR station and Dentetsu Toyama station. Just round the corner to the Observatory Tower. Safe surroundings for walking to the station in the early morning around 5am

All cleaned and very friendly staff! 5 min walk to Toyama station and a lot of choice of restaurants.also convince store is very close. Please note that cats are in this hostel. It’s perfect place for you if you love cats and Haruki Murakami library!

I love the breakfast at Toyama Manten Hotel. The reception was very friendly and the room was conscientiously provided for and clean. Furthermore the location is good, not too far to walk from the main Toyama station.
