Some nice natural places around Otavalo - Cascada de Peguche, Laguna Cuicocha near Cotacachi and Laguna Mojanda in the mountains/paramo. The Otavalo market on Saturday was well worth the visit. Lago de San Pablo was really nice and had some great birding. Great scener., Volcan Imbabura and Volcan Cotacahi are very impressive.
Otavalo itself isn't a particularly spectacular town, but it has the best hostal options for the area and is a great base for exploring nearby towns (Cotacachi, Ibarra) and mountains/volcanoes/lakes (Imbabura, Cayambe, Fuya Fuya, Cuicocha). The Saturday market is amazing as well!
We live in Ecuador and have been to Otavalo many times. However, this time we took my mom to a quaint hotel overlooking Otavalo and Imbabura. It was beautiful! I would come back a million times for the peace and tranquility.
El Argentina is a great restaurant and Imbabura is a hard but rewarding climb. If you want to visit traditional Ecuador off the beaten track then Ibarra is for you!
This is a pristine mountain town located between Imbabura and Cotacachi volcanoes. Views are stunning. Easy access to hiking, trekking, climbing. Also close to Otovalo and other interesting mountain towns. The town is clean and quiet. If you like leather, this town is for you. High quality leather apparel of all varieties are available and at very reasonable prices.

Best hostel if you want to climb Imbabura with personally the best owner I have met in Ecuador, Emerson. He is really interested to get to know you and help you with anything you need, also works as a guide for the Imbabura at a reasonable price. We even did a calesthenics workout together and his two dogs are super friendly and cute, can really recommend 10/10. Also a great kitchen and a beautiful view in the outside area :)
Some folks go above and beyond, and Patricio is one of them. He provides everything you need, and even at night gives you a hit water bag to keep your feet warm in bed. The rooms have great views, he’s a trained chef so you can purchase meals if you want, he has a kitchen for guests to use if you prefer. It’s a short walk up to great trails on the mountain, or to the lake if you prefer that. And his children are super friendly and helpful. A perfect stay.
All the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We called the hotel to let them know that we were going to check in late and they were waiting for us. Breakfast was delicious and the rooms and grounds were beautiful. Great stay!

The hacienda is the perfect blend of great hospitality, history and beauty. The staff could not have been better. They were efficient and friendly. It is a very peaceful place to stay.
