An excellent hotel, being here took away much of the stress, that a foreigner like me had traveling in China. Although not all staff speaks English, communication was never a problem. Excellent breakfast and buffet lunch. Was no problem to organize local sightseeing through the hotel.

I went in Off Season (winters) so grasslands and Greenry was a no no. Everything was froezen and that's when I used the opportunity to have my first skiing experience. The people at the skiing arena were really polite and helpful. They even help me learn! :) Uyghur people are really nice an dhelpful and their food just delicious. It's basic food of bread, meat, yogurt, raisins and all ( you can find great turkish restraunts here) but it's simply delicious. Poeple are down to earth. I would definetly go back to Xinjiang (not only Urumqi)
This is not western china. It has been drowned by the invasion of Han chinese. Although, you can find neighborhoods were you do feel like you are in Xinjiang which is nice. I would recommend skipping Urumqi and spending more time in Kashgar.

Fabulous staff, a beautiful hostel, and a marvelous experience there. One of the most special hostels I have ever stayed in, and the owner and workers are super kind. :) It is located in a very authentic area and there are many local restaurants around. The atmosphere of the hostel is very nice, and it is easy to meet other guests (and even share a tour). When I go back to Xinjiang, I will stay at the Dap Hostel for sure!
