Porto Alegre is not a naturally touristic city, but there are some nice places to visit. Is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, a city 3 million inhabitants and have a unique mix of cosmopolitan/progressive and traditional way of life city. Instead englobe a 3 million people metropolitan area, there are some places where you can feel the roots of the inhabitants that came from countryside and adopt the capital to live, but stay with some little cities habits. If you go to Porto Alegre you have to try and taste the world famous "churrasco", the real Brazilian barbecue - simply the best in the world. Porto Alegre is a very cultural city, with some European influences (lot more than other Brazilian regions, because the European immigration - specially germans and italians) but with a strong related with the pampa man (see the statue of the "Gaucho", near airport), which is a close link to the other American countries (specially Argentina and Uruguay). If you go to Porto Alegre, go open to know what this people lived and can tell about they own culture - its a unique opportunity...
We're not fans of heat, and it was HOT, so that reality influences this review. Also, the traffic is just plain awful in Porto Alegre, and drivers are unforgiving. If you're driving, expect it to be hard to get around and be on your guard. On the positive side, the MARGS (Museu de Arte de Rio Grande do Sul) was a highlight and well worth a visit if you're up for dealing with a city that's rather tough to navigate by car. To be fair, maybe public transportation would be a better option, but we were road tripping. Some of the parks are rather nice, especially the botanic gardens, which was well worth the visit. The public market is also worth a visit, especially if you want to learn about chimarrão. We would consider visiting Porto Alegre again in the winter when it's not so hot, but probably wouldn't go out of our way to go there.
Santana do Livramento is a typical Rio Grande do Sul Border town. There is not much to see here. The main purpose of visiting this town is to shop in Rivera do make the most of the Duty Free Shops or visit the Cassino.
