Cordillera Escalera Lodge, hotel in Lamas

Situated in Tarapoto, Cordillera Escalera Lodge features free WiFi, and guests can enjoy a garden, a private beach area and a terrace.

The main thing about this lodge is that you are both really immersed in the natural environment but a walk or short moto-taxi ride from town. The more expensive luxury lodges further out of town maybe have more green space to explore and an even more secluded vibe... but this is a great compromise to experience both city and jungle at a great value price. Mindblowing fauna on-site - hummingbirds, woodpeckers, toucans and cute tamarin monkeys in the trees close by the bungalows (though as with elsewhere in the cloud forest area, you might need a telephoto lens or binoculars to see them as the canopy is so high). There was an abundance of butterflies and I had a praying mantis on my door one morning. As a naturalist who loves insects it was totally magical to stay here... the biodiversity is off the scale - amazing to have this 10 minutes from the town centre. By Urku down the road I also saw a monitor lizard ( a few metres long ), frogs at dusk and a macaw above the river. As a solo English traveller, having Christian there to translate for me also made a huge difference. He offered me lifts to town / elsewhere...booked me taxis... and generally went above and beyond as a host. Thankyou so much Christian! All the other people who worked there were also very kind sweet people, ready to help me when needed too. Like many places in Peru, it's gated and has a night guard ( also a lovely guy )... so it feels safe despite it's isolation. Tarapoto in general felt safe to me and I loved visiting the colourful town as well - I'm glad I didn't miss out on that being at the more remote lodges.

Canto del Río Lodge, hotel in Lamas

With mountain views, Canto del Río Lodge is set in Tarapoto and has a restaurant, a shared lounge, bar, garden, year-round outdoor pool and terrace.

The quarters were fit for a queen after my retreat in the jungle with very basic living arrangements! With very short notice, about a day, I was able to book a room. The shower was strong and hot! The bed and room were spacious and comfy, with a delightful balcony. The landscaping was gorgeous and well tended. The staff were friendly, courteous, and responsive to my needs. They were able to easily accommodate my special diet. When attempting to communicate with google translator was cumbersome, Brigitte referred me to an administrator who could respond promptly in my language, English. This kind person was able to deliver a printed boarding pass for my flight the following day.

Villa Sebastiana Bungalows, hotel in Lamas

Featuring river views, Villa Sebastiana Bungalows in Tarapoto features accommodation, an outdoor swimming pool, a garden, a terrace and a restaurant.

This is a private residency that was decided to be rented as a hotel, and you can feel it right away. The service is not smooth. Cleaning is not ok, no hot water, bath smelled from the first day, the breakfast was two eggs, one piece of bread, and some tiny pieces of fruits, which is ok, but definitely not the level of "lux bungalow". The enterence is "private" , meaning you arrive at the closed gate and have to call a manager, but the connection is off at that place so we had to come back to the main road to catch a connection. Then once you are at the property you are totally dependable on the manager. Whatever you want - just text him. But the internet is very bad and often off. The guy doesnt always checking the phone, as the proverb goes the first day the guest is a gold, but the last day they are a trash. The same is here! The territory is nice. That is it. As a traveller with an experience I can say that this place has a lot to improve and the manager is a young guy who is smiling into your face all the time but has soemthing else in his mind.

Bosque Guardian Lodge, hotel in Lamas

Located among breath-taking views of the Peruvian Amazon, Bosque Guardian Lodge is only 40 minutes away from the city of Tarapoto’s airport, in San Martin Region.

The property is very exclusive, in the middle of the jungle: everything is 5 STAR: the accomodation, the food the personal attention. Usually in other places the pictures are better than reality , here the reality was 2 class higher than we expected!

We got a room with a beautiful view of Escalera Mountain Range. The sunsets were spectacular. The room, and the lodge in general is full of art pieces that give a unique touch to the property. Ah! they have an amazing library where you can spend time reading about history, art, ethnobotany, etc. All with an impressive view of the landscape. Breakfast was excellent with home-made bread and jam(!).

What a wonderful place in a jungle away from the noise. The lodge has a yoga studio, a working area, great kitchen facilities and cozy rooms. The approach of the owners, Claudia and Javier, is to live in harmony with the nature and this principle is followed at the facilities. Multiple breakfast options to choose from - all delicious and filling. It even has private access to a river.
