Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.
In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

San Francisco is a great city and I enjoyed spending a week there. The museums I visited were great, from large to small - De Young Museum, the Museum of American Bookbinders, the Museum of Craft and Design, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. All charged an entrance fee, but I did not feel any were too expensive. I would advise checking opening times in advance of your visit, as I missed my opportunity to visit the Galeria de la Raza and the Asian Arts Museum. I used public transport extensively, using the Clipper Card on my phone, which I could monitor and top up. I also walked around various neighbourhoods which allows you to see more. I used independent coffee shops rather than chains, and ate at smaller venues, mostly. There are some good online guides if you need help choosing, but I had a particularly good experience at Mensho Tokyo for ramen, and Ciccino's for modern Italian. I took a day tour to wine country which was great, and gave an opportunity to see the region north of the Golden Gate Bridge. I enjoyed my visit very much and hope to visit again sometime.

Perhaps the new administration can return the city to its former glory. Saw a guy asleep on ground at a bus stop (could have been dead?). Good restaurants, great symphony orchestra. Visited SFMOMA - for an art lover, not very interesting above the 2nd floor. Lots of empty space. Nothing provocative. Lots of politically correct exhibits. Boring.

San Francisco is my home town.
San Francisco is my home town. Every time I return, I revisit memory lane and take-in something new - because there's always something exciting going on. I support local. Returning to iconic restaurants like Sears Fine Food on Powell St is always nostalgic. If I strike up a craving for fish and chips, the best in town are still Piccadilly Fish & Chips on Polk Street. Don't let the modest no frills exterior deceive you. The family if charming. Whether I'm hanging out in Japantown or North Beach, there's plenty to see and do all day long - which never gets old.

Nob hill was a really good neighborhood that I stayed in as a first time visitor. Very close to China town and to the piers. We did public transport which I totally recommend (use the clipper card). Parking looked difficult to find and when you did find it, it was really expensive. Plus break ins are very common in San Fran. China town dim sum bistro was veryyy good and cheap. Also in China town hi sweetie boba was really good and good prices. The mango coconut cream with boba i recommend from there. The muse In Nob hill had good smoothies if your into that (little pricey). I recommend the farmers market on Sundays at the fort Mason. The Nob hill motor inn was very clean, good price for our stay, has parking for people with cars, good safe area. There’s a place down the block called the bell tower. It’s a bar/ restaurant they’re food was actually really good for selling things like quesadillas, nachos etc.

We rented bicycles and biked through and passed the Golden Gate Bridge. That was the highlight of our short trip. It was wonderful, the fresh air, spectacular views, the thrill, and getting our workouts. I highly recommend it to everyone visiting the city!

Just a 2 night stay in Sanfrancisco before flying back to the UK, had spent 11 days in san Luis Obispo visiting family and wanted to take in some sights. Would highly recommend Alcatraz, we didn't pre book as it was out of season and not so busy and it was much cheaper at pier 33but in high season I probably wouldn't chance it. We also took an open bus tour and that was well worth it, we couldn't have squeezed so many places in otherwise, the hop on hop off bus was a very good way of touring the city sights. The street cars are amazing and public transport very reasonable and plentiful. Fisherman's wharf and pier 39 are very touristy and offer many different food choices, especially seafood. Obviously very hilly streets, great work out walking, felt safe and the road crossing was easy to negotiate.
Definitely would recommend.

first of all was greeted by the owner, who was so lovely, made me feel very welcome, advised on how to best spend my few days in san francisco, gave me map, advise what to do and where not to go. The room was very clean, quiet and felt warm (in a good way). shared bathroom and toilet were very clean and not too many people sharing with. The hotel was 10 min walk to Union square and just slightly more to the closest train station (there direct train to the airport) so very easy commute.
Very well located for Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach and Embarcadero areas of San Francisco and we were able to walk to most places easily from this hotel. The staff were friendly, and the quirky rooms were spacious. There was a simple continental breakfast included, which we were satisfied with on one occasion although we did choose to go out for brunch one morning instead. There is a complimentary wine hour in the evening, with snacks, which was a nice touch.
Location is amazing. A street car stop right outside our hotel was perfect. Union Square is full of designer shops and has amazing lighting at night. A great central point to visit all of San Francisco. Most welcoming hotel ever. Free homemade cookies (oh lord!!!), coffee, fruit, sweets and pop corn. A half price drink at the bar on arrival. Just wonderful. An excellent spirts bar just 2 doors away. Perfect.
Location - much better than I expected. I was worried it was a little too close to the area I had been told to avoid, but in fact was very nice (next to union square) and was very convenient to travel around the city.
Room - Large room, comfortable bed, nice bathroom.
Hotel - lovely building with great interiors. Very atmospheric/ historic
Well-located just around the corner from Union Square and five minutes from the Chinatown area of San Francisco. We enjoyed strolling down to the harbour area (easy once you clear the hill, or take a detour across a couple of blocks where the gradient is less steep!) and this could be done in 35-45 minutes. The service was also very good.
