Sadly Union Squares gone so downhill, tbh it couldn't get much worse. So many empty shops. This wasn't for first trip to San Francisco, regrettably it will be our last. The change in the last six years is massive. We didn't feel particularly safe there, which wasn't helped by all the signs warning you. Our first night there must have been 100-150 motorbikes and Quads all racing down the Main Street, with loads of the bikes pulling wheelies, this wasn't an official organised event simply a load of bikers took it upon themselves. There was one police car with its lights flashing but nobody taking an ounce of notice.

Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops.
Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops. The staff in the subway are pretty touchy, and you have to get the clipper card to use public transport. The area going away from the wharf is quite seedy, like an open-air opium den with drug users injecting in public. Some of the cafes included taxes of ~$30USD, bringing out breakfast for 2 to $85. Better to ask ahead. Expensive place overall.

Union Square is right in the heart of San Francisco with lawns, steps and trees. A perfect square amongst expensive hotels and Macy's store. Nice to sit and eat lunch and watch the passing parade. Also the cable car goes up the side street of Union Square.

Very good location, 5min from Union square, Mtro, Market street, and 30 min from financial district.
The hotel is a little bit old but well maintained and very clean.
The hotel is conveniently located right in the heart of Union Square. The room was small but fairly comfortable. While there was a refrigerator in the room, there was no coffee pot. However, the lobby offered complimentary coffee, a water station, and cookies, which was quite convenient. Although the hotel is old, it can be described as clean and well-maintained.
We were a little hesitant about the location of the hotel but it was fine. It is so central, a short walk to union square and close to a lot of transport links to get around the city. The rooms are nice but a little dark. There is a beautiful bar/restaurant down stairs where you get a free drink on arrival. We had a few drinks here before we went for dinner.
The Handlery Union Square Hotel is amazing! It’s right in the heart of Union Square, making it super convenient for shopping, restaurants, and everything San Francisco has to offer. The room was way more comfortable than I expected for an older hotel, and the bed was so cozy.
The staff were fantastic—they let us check in early at 10 a.m. and gave us a late check-out at 1 p.m., which I’ve never experienced anywhere else. We stayed for seven days, and everything was great from start to finish. I’ll definitely stay here again!
Very modern room with great amenities for a hostel (stayed in a private room so wasn't sharing with others). Room was also a lot larger than expected & very comfortable. Location was great & very central to union square , public transport.
Location was really good near to the Union square and BART station . It was like a 10 minutes walk. The hotel was clean, looked sophisticated, and a marvellous dedication to the armed forces . No homeless people around like the other part of the cities . Definitely should stay here
Very kind staff, friendly and welcoming. Excellent location, right behind Union Square. One of the best hotels i have stayed in, it has a boutique hotel vibe and experience. Absolutely worth paying the money.
The hotel is in a great location and walking distance to Pier 39 and all restaurants as well as public transportation. The hotel has a fantastic breakfast. We were able to leave our bags with the concierge on check in and check out and felt completely safe doing so.
Be sure to purchase a $13 Muni ticket (available at the cable car pick up) and ride the Cable Car as well as any of the buses/trams in a 24-hour period, great value if you plan your day well. An excellent way to explore up into Union Square, Presidio and Golden Gate Park.
Perfect location, big rooms and for San Francisco quite rooms but depends on which side of the hotel. I have stayed in the hotel several times and in many others around the Union Square. Donatello is great for the money.
