As a former sea-farer, I always like to visit Maritime Museums. This one is AMAZING! Occupying a former monastery, (which is a majestic building), the museum tells the amazing story of Portuguese exploration, and its wooden ships rounding the Southern tip of Africa and entering the Indian Ocean long before any other European nation!

Very interesting place to visit - for us it was the navigational instruments and maps the Portugeuse were using back in the 15th & 16th centuries which was amazing. We'd read some reviews criticising the lack of apology for past slavery, but that's missing the point of what the museum is trying to showcase. If you want to look for that maybe need to go to a cultural history museum instead.
