Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.

Damage to the path means its only a 15 minute walk to a view...
Damage to the path means its only a 15 minute walk to a view point now, but you are further away.
The constant noise of helicopters means you aren't really going to see the birds or feel you are particularly close to nature.
The walks and car parks are excellent. It's just a bit of a sausage factory in summer.

Gorgeous and disappointing.
Gorgeous and disappointing. If you want to really touch ice, if you want to walk close to the Glacier you must take an expensive helicopter flight wich drops you in the middle of the glacier.
Those who think that ecology does not match with helicopters flghts or the ones who can't aford it, will just see the glacier from very far away since the glacier has rectracted for the past 4 years, and the track through the canyon is not save.

The Alpine Glacier Hotel was clean and comfortable for our family of four. The receptionist was very lovely and helpful with any of our requests. The motel was a good distance from local stores and restaurants such as Snake Bite Brewery and The Landing and the tourist attractions such as Franz Josef Glaciers and the Fox Glaciers, not too far if you have a car.
The location was awesome as it was walkable to Franz Josef Glacier and a 20 minute car ride from Fox Glacier. The bed, linens, and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast was carb heavy (cereal, waffles, pancakes, toast + spread, and coffee/tea) which was perfect fuel for hiking. Big kitchen facilities with all the appliances and cooking equipment to make basic meals. Bathroom, bedrooms, and common areas were quite clean for a hostel. Nice to have individual outlets (including USB) and light for each bunk bed.
Such a gorgeous chalet and stunning location! Views of Franz Josef glacier from your chalet window! Very peaceful location, a lovely escape from the busyness of travel.
Very well designed and furnished was the room. All the comfort was there, even an leather sofa with a big coffee table and as surprise there was a fireplace (gas). And the patio was wonderful and straight against the rainforest.
The cleanliness and comfort was excellent. The location was ideal, only few steps away from all the cafes and restaurants and the Franz Josef Glacier was only a short drive away.

Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier was temporarily closed at the time we stayed, so we were transfered to Te Waonui Forest Retreat. Everything there was really great.
The rural location was superb with views to the Franz Josef Glacier. We were so glad we stayed out of town. Although it's an excellent town with supermarket, cafes and facilities we enjoyed the rural surrounds of Te Awa Cottages. They felt homey, warm and comfortable with everything we needed to explore the region including maps. We enjoyed sitting on the the wide veranda, watching the sun set over the mountains and the night sky. It was one of our favourite places we stayed and we'd love to come back one day.
Rustic ‘60s style motel. Quiet location, spacious well equipped eith cooking facilities etc. provided everything a traveller needs.
Bonus was a fantastic view of Franz Josef Glacier.
Staff were Chinese speaking but used google translator to communicate- so no problems.
