When we arrived, we were blown away by the luxury that is provided compared to the price. Yes, it is more expensive than other homestays in Ella, and it is worth every single penny. We had our own car but really didn't want to drive back down after getting up the narrow, busy road. He took us to town for dinner and picked us up. On our second day, we just wanted to stay and watch the train and activity on the bridge and catch up on some work. The breakfast was massive! We were impressed by the fact that there were 3 electric outlets on the balcony. We were able to sit outside in the shade perched above the crowd and catch up on some business. We caught every single train that day on video, with a drone, or with photos. The first train at 6:20 am is the best chance to get some solo footage. If you stay here, you can wake up, get the shot, and go back to sleep. We were so caught up with work that we forgot to eat. The host came by and offered a ride to town for dinner. Since we didn't want to go, he ordered takeout and delivered it to us. The bed was so comfortable, and the hot water was some of the best we have had in Asia! Not only would I stay again, but I would live here!

The residence was super nice! Thimira was such a wonderful host and was so friendly, smiley and helpful. Easily one of the nicest people we met while staying in Sri Lanka. The room was super spacious and had a gorgeous terrace where we had breakfast in the morning. Breakfast was very nice too. Wish we could have stayed longer.

The rickshaws shouldn’t charge more than 500rs one way.
The rickshaws shouldn’t charge more than 500rs one way. They stop at a point beyond which it’s a steep descent on stairs and some narrow but safe enough pathways that lead to the bridge. Therefore the walk back is also a steep incline. There are monkeys who mind their business. Or you can choose to walk the entirety of it. It took us 1 hour to go and come back with ampke breaks and a slow pace. My 60+ year old parents with above average to good fitness levels could do it.

Fairly strenuous walk down to the bridge, which in it's self is a wonderful feat of British engineering and Sri Lankan effort!. However, our anticipation was dampened by the sheer volume of other tourists on the bridge (at least 1000) all waiting and jostling for the best spot to get a photo of the anticipated train. There are far more beautiful and less touristy things to see and do in Sri Lanka than this.

Best to go for early morning train times as there are less people. We went in the afternoon and it was still wonderful. You can walk around 3kms (quite steep though in parts) or you can take a tuk tuk for around 3000 LKR (and they wait for you to return to Ella).

When stood on the train platform at Ella (looking at the tracks) walk right. Once on the tracks continue to walk for approximately 2km. Once at the tunnel go through and the 9 Arch bridge is on the opposite end. There is enough room at the sides of the track if a train were to come by.

Ella is truly overrated, but I stayed in a guesthouse near the bridge and enjoyed seeing trains come through. I left Ella by train and would have enjoyed any of several towns at which it stopped in preference to the unashamed total touristic nature of Ella.

Walking along the railway line is not to be missed!
Walking along the railway line is not to be missed! You can hear the trains well in advance and there is plenty of space to step off the lines if a train does come (which is infrequent). The Nine Arch Bridge is something really special.
