The location was fantastic. The rooms were clean, modern and minimalistic but very cozy and comfortable. The raised platform was helpful to organise luggage and warm clothes. Room was very clean. The free drinks in the lounge were a very nice touch as there’s not much to do in takayama in the evening. Restaurants close early so one has to have early dinner. So liked handing out in the lounge with drinks after a long day. Did not have the breakfast so can’t comment but the place is so well located that there are so many good options around. don’t understand why western people would order breakfast expecting western breakfast and then complain they didn’t like it

Small boutique hotel. Very comfortable stay. Loved, loved the bath and shower in the room. The wooden timber made it feel like it was a hot bath/sauna. The shower head was also very wide and comfortable. Top notch bathroom/shower. Also liked that the toilet was separate from the bathroom. Family of 4 travelling together.
Hotel also had coin operated washing machine and dryer.
Location was also good. Old town was 5-10 minutes walk.

It was so comfortable - the beds, the rooms and bathroom & very unique to be part of a temple with a generous offer of different things to experience. Our room overlooked a lovely Japanese garden which was surrounded by the temple. We did the early morning prayer session, followed by an introduction to meditation and we did the dark tunnel activity for fun. We could purchase a lovely coffee in the morning which we were grateful for.

The location of the ryokan is a stone’s throw away from the JR station and bus station to Shirakawago (2-3 mins walk). It is also about a 10 mins walk to the Miyagawa morning markets and the old parts of Takayama. The ryokan itself was very well-maintained, onsen was clean. They had a cosy corner for you to relax after onsen session with books and free tea. The staff provided excellent customer service, went above and beyond with dinner recommendations. Highly recommended!
Love old building vibe and the location a lot, it's right next to Miyagawa Morning Market, which from the window view of our room, we can see the market directly. The room is very cozy with tatami (and bed with heater) and a small chilling area with table and beanbags. They also sell discount tickets for the closest public bath and provide free toiletries too.
Everything was nice I couldn't ask for more. Room fit for even 4 persons, the location was good we could walk to Miyagawa Morning Market and also to Takayama Station easily. Looking forward to revisiting :)
Really nice hotel, clean and spacious rooms. Really friendly staff, stored my luggage before check in and helped send on my luggage via Yamato. Great location, walking distance from station and very close to the river and Miyagawa morning markets. Pleasantly surprised at being able to use hotel spa facilities despite being tattooed. Nice looking buffet breakfast, with a few vegan options.
Hotel is in a good location and within walking distance to the Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama old town. There are also supermarkets and a mall not far from the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions. There's a water dispenser at the lobby floor where we can refill our water bottles.

We loved our stay at Utatei. As it was a private house, it was wonderful having so much space. The beds were very comfy and I think i slept better here than anywhere else in Japan! There were heating / cooling options on both levels, although we didnt need them as we stayed in spring.The location was fantastic, right across the river from the Miyagawa Morning markets / old town and walking distance to all the main sites. Highly recommend this house!
