The hotel fully lives up to its name. Lots of various wooden furniture and decorations are used. The hotel is new, with modern design, focused on wood. You can even smell it in your room.
Super great location. There is combini store in the next building.
Hotel provides Japanese and Western breakfasts in bentos.
There is no bathtub in a room, but there is onsen-like sauna.
Additionally I can recommend massage service. Therapist speaks English and really does great job.

Generous sized room compared to others we've had in Japan. Right next to the train station and coach station. Old Takayama easy walking distance. Nice touch of free drinks in our fridge. We were a family of 4 and had 3 nice firm beds. We were also given vouchers for a drink in their cafe.

Great location super close to the train station so you’re not having to lug your bags around. The main “old town” street is about a 15 minute walk which was awesome. The whole town is so flat so very family/stroller friendly. We stayed in the suite so we had the whole top floor to ourselves! The bathroom was great for little kids as well with a nice big wooden tub (it was hot during the summer so the kids used it as “mini pool” in the afternoon to cool off and relax). The staff were kind and booked our dinner for us because most things seem to close early once they reach capacity.

Hotel is in a good location and within walking distance to the Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama old town. There are also supermarkets and a mall not far from the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions. There's a water dispenser at the lobby floor where we can refill our water bottles.

We loved our stay at Utatei. As it was a private house, it was wonderful having so much space. The beds were very comfy and I think i slept better here than anywhere else in Japan! There were heating / cooling options on both levels, although we didnt need them as we stayed in spring.The location was fantastic, right across the river from the Miyagawa Morning markets / old town and walking distance to all the main sites. Highly recommend this house!
Room is spacious! Good location near Takayama station with nearby convenience store/restaurants. Area is pretty quiet despite being near the station because most tourists are gathered at Sanmachi-dori and the Miyagawa morning market area (which are easily reached via a short and pleasant walk from the hotel)
P.S. First time visitors: be sure to make plans (reservation) for dinner as most restaurants are fully booked in the evening!
The location was a short walk away from the train station and the bus terminal so it was easy to take day trips from there without stressing for time or having to factor in travel time to walk to the station, the hotel was close to Sanmachi Suji, the Miyagawa morning markets, and Takayama Jinya, and staff were very friendly and helpful and would greet us whenever we walked through the lobby. The apartment was spacious and well set out with heaps of amenities for us to use. Would have loved to have stayed there for longer!
A modern Japanese hotel which married modern and Japanese architecture and space designs. Room was minimalist but comfortable. Complimentary drinks including sake, wine & beer in the evenings. Public bath is small but good enough.
Staff were attentive and helpful despite the language barrier. They made wonderful recommendations for Hida beef restaurants nearby.
5 - 10 mins walk to the Miyagawa Morning Market and Sannomachi which is a charming area with old buildings now serving as restaurants, shops and museums.
