Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We stayed overnight on our way from Scotland and wanted to see York Minster. A volunteer gave us a tour which was really informative and brought the rich history of York to life. On a previous visit we went to the Jorvik Centre which is great for the kids. The streets in the centre have some quirky shops and cobbled streets with nice atmosphere. We ate in a really good Chinese Restaurant Shi Shang just outside the city wall.

Spent 11 hours walking and exploring in York!
Spent 11 hours walking and exploring in York! The railways station was lovely, walking The York Walls was brilliant, seeing York Minster was breathtaking, soaking up the atmosphere in the city, visiting pubs (some very old and historical ones) watching the world go by, having an amazing dinner, looking at and photographing all the unique and quaint streets and buildings - it was all totally amazing - the river views were lovely too! Didn’t visit any museums as the weather was so beautiful we didn’t want to be inside although would visit some next time we are in York! Loves the entire day from start to finish.

Loads of things to do in York - altho some re a little pricey if there are more than a couple of you. York Dungeon is a great place to go - prebook online to get the best prices. A little gem is the York Army museum (near the Castle museum) -small but really good value for money. Lovely little cafe bar just up from the York Dungeon ‘The PAB’ loaded nachos for lunch was delish!

Really nice city full of character and interesting tales. Lots of small independent shops selling all sorts. Very good selection of restaurants to suit all budgets. The leisurely river cruise was nice. York Dungeons was very good. Bettys Tea Rooms was worth the wait and very reasonable.
York Minster is very impressive.
The Rose and Crown just outside the south city wall is a great pub.
We had a great meal at Kalpakavadi, southern Indian restaurant. The Nadan Aattirachi lamb curry was incredible.
Lovely Hotel, great location, 2
Minute walk to York train station, and just several minutes walk to City Centre. NCP Car Park 1 minute walk with savings using the NCP App. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Lovely evening meal and breakfast, however felt the cooked breakfast should have been cooked to order as opposed to Buffett service. Would definitely return.
Bus stop near hotel to get into York City centre. A couple of local pubs close by although we only went into one of them for drinks and a meal. Hotel and our room clean and smelt nice. Breakfast good. Plenty of parking although there is a charge of £7 (approx) per night.
The hotel is conveniently located on a reasonably quiet street in City Centre. It's easy to find, and it serves as a great launch place for a walking adventure in York. The rooms are small but comfortable, as are the bathrooms, which have great walk-in showers.
The Churchill Hotel is very comfortable, very central a few minutes walk into York City centre, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the bunker rooms are brilliant, fun, romantic, the food was lovely too. A perfect place to stay when in York.
