The Grand, York, hotel in York

The 5-star Grand Hotel offers stylish rooms and a luxury vaulted spa.

Convenient location to the main tourist attractions in York. Most are within a 10-15 min walk. There is an entrance to the old city wall across the road from the hotel. York train station is a level 5 minute walk. Our room was in the new wing that is attached to the main heritage building. Everything was clean, well maintained, and everything worked. The Rise Restaurant was excellent. The staff were lovely and the food was well prepared and attractively presented.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

The amount of good restaurants and cafes were endless.

The amount of good restaurants and cafes were endless. We chose to eat out for all our meals and were never disappointed. So much going on all over the city from street entertainment to opera singer and fabulous musicians. On the evenings, we saw three separate ghost tours on at the same time all with a lot of followers. The market is a wonderful attraction, with so many different traders with lots of choice. The spiced rum stall was a favourite straight away. Betties is always on our list, Cote for a beautiful breakfast and Miller & Carter for the best steak in town. York is very flat, so easy to get around. We did not go into the Minster as we very much disagreed with the fixed price of £18 per person to visit a church. It makes far more sense to ask for a donation, like Durham Cathedral does, more people would visit.

    Loved the fort wall walk.

Loved the fort wall walk. Loved the railway museum, which was why we went to York, unfortunately it is in a state of renewal and the roads are blocked off, footpaths barricaded etc, to be expected, it will be terrific once completed. This is a popular destination, was very crowded, get there early if you don't like crowds.....

We stayed in the new modern wing, bed was comfortable, good lighting and room was well designed. Location couldn’t be more optimal…5 mins walk from train station and 7 mins into the City Centre, 12 mins to York Minster. Staff were friendly and helpful. Part of the York’s famous city walls was just across the road though much of it is currently closed for maintenance work. The hotel is a historical building with beautiful wood panelling and is well maintained.
